Cash Game Rules

Anyone have a list of cash game rules? I play in a weekly cash game and for the past two weeks, we have seen a big pot win and then the winner of the pot bails after the hand. I have been at some clubs were they make you announce that you are leaving 15 minutes prior to the time you want to leave and I have been at places that you have to play for a hour cash out and then buy back into the next game if there is one.

I dont think you'll find a rules book that states how long you have to stick around. However, you can make a rule that applies to your cash game if everyone agrees.

It sucks to see a donkey win a big pot and then bail because he knows he's going to lose it all if he sticks around.

Re: Cash Game Rules

"Robert's Rules" have some good rules for home games and poker in general.

But if you can't find a rule you like, then you can just make your own home game rules.

For example at my home game, I have a rule stating you have to announce you are leaving 20 minutes prior to leaving. Or if you are planning on leaving early in advance you have to announce the time on arrival for the game.

Re: Cash Game Rules

While I am not one to hit-and-run myself, I think having rules about when players are allowed to cash out of a cash game is little weak. I guess if it's necessary just make a note to everyone that it is bad form to snatch a huge pot and immediately bolt. If certain players seem to make a habit of doing this and it bothers you and the other players then don't invite them back.

X2

If that same guy won't listen then it would be wise not to invite him.

Re: Cash Game Rules

There's definitely one or two threads on CT listing various rules from all the members of CT. I will try to find the link for you but search should work too.

As everyone said rules for home games are usually determined by the host. I know the cash games I play in it is well known that winning a big hand then immediately bailing is rude and will get you dis-invited to any future games. We use a combination of announcing either "last orbit" or "I'm leaving at X time" and we usually have it around 20-30 minutes minimum. I guess the big difference is that the games I play in the players actually enjoy playing poker and aren't there just to make money. Our games are as much about poker and socializing as the money(but making money while doing it is nice too )

is this player a regular? If so I would say talk to them about it and if they don't understand or agree then stop inviting them (I know having a donk-fish at the game is a good thing but if they hit and run what good is it to have 'em there).

I would suggest moving forward putting as et of rules in place before the game starts so there is no issues. If the donk-fish tries to do it again with the rules in place the banker can simply give them their original buy in back and say bye.

I agree totally. I don't think there should be a rule about when you can/can't cash out. I would just make a point to have the other players express to that one guy the common courtesy that should be exhibited at the poker table. If you make that guy feel bad enough about leaving right after a big pot, chances are he won't do it again. If he does, simply don't invite him back. He'll get the picture eventually.

is he likely to come back? wouldn't he lose it all later anyhow? the big picture here is that you want the bad players to keep coming. if he comes 5 times, losing 2 buyins each time, then comes the 6th time, triples up and leaves, you should be pleased as punch. he's happy b/c he made money this week, and you're happy b/c he's plowed 8 buyins into your game over the last 5 weeks.

berating him, telling him he's rude, making him stay and very possibly losing a bunch back, all hurts the overall object, which is to get him to keep playing. it doesn't matter whether he loses it all back this week, next, or next month...just that he spend time at the table with you.

making a rule might make everyone feel better in the short term, but isn't in line with what you really want.
