Chips: 156 | | | Home game Win and run. First off, I should say that I now know you need to have the home rules printed somewhere for all to see, but for some reason I didn't think I needed for my home game. (this will be a long post)
My current home game only gets together about every other month. It's a very social home game where we play about 10 hands per hour.
After almost everybody busted out or cashed out, (I was part of the former) I was dealing to the last two players, a guy and a girl, playing heads up at my house. One of the players was a girl who was playing poker for only her second time...ever. But she's very competitive and has read a lot about poker strategies on the internet so she wouldn't make a fool of herself at my house. The girl was up big. Her original buy-in of $20 was now about $70, and she was pumped about it. The guy was up about ten bucks, with a little over $30 in front of him and was down in the dumps because he had more chips about 2 hours earlier. Being as it was my house at 3AM, and I was busted out, I asked them how much longer they wanted to play, and she said she was ready to quit, and he wanted to keep playing. She, being very nice, said she would keep playing because he wanted to. BTW, the guy and girl are really good friends who get in heated arguments a lot (both lawyers). They are both competitive and argue like brother and sister.
THE HAND .25/.50 NLHE ring game.
He was the dealer and she raised $2 preflop, and he called.
The flop was AK8, she bet $2 and he called.
The turn was another Ace, she bet $2, he called.
The river was a 6,the board is now A,A,K,8,6. she bet $2, he went all in for about $25. She called. He flipped over 6,6 and won the pot. She showed A,10. (terrible suckout, bu that's for another post)
Then the guy counts his chips. He's got about $70 now and wants to cash out without playing another hand. After hearing this, she gets pissed, and he tells her "that's the way it is in a cash game, you can leave whenever you want." She says, "I was ready to go and was only playing because you wanted to!"
When he goes into the bathroom, she's still mad and asked me if many people do that. I told her that most people will stay around and play more hands just as a nice gesture. I told her that "my old home game in Lubbock had a 20 minute rule that players had to announce ahead of time that they would be leaving, But I've never mentioned it at this new home game and I can't make the guy sit there and fold hands for 20 minutes when I've never even mentioned that rule before." She agreed, and they both left.
It's too bad the night had to end this way because it was a fun game.
Does a player have to play for X ammount of time after he announces he wants to cash out at your home game?
if so, how long is the time period?
Would, you have done anything different if you were me in my situation? |

That said though, in the absence of any stated rule, I don't think you can enforce anything in this situation. You can certainly tell him as host though that you agree with the girl and that he exhibited some very unsportsmanlike conduct. I'd also come up with a 20 minute rule (as well as other house rules) if you think it's needed now.

I would have acted like you did...if you do not mention a rule before it happens, then it is too late.
But i would have emphasized that it is a very questionable behavior.
Espacially in a situation like the one you mentioned. If they are only 2 players and she plays to give him a chance than his behavior is more than rude. I would have a very bad opinion about a player like that and i would always remember his unethical behavior. You don´t do things like that if you play with friends. You can do it in a casino (even there i think i would just fold one orbit instead of leaving directly after a big win) or if you play online. |

How about this rule (okay, perhaps it's more of a "guideline")...don't invite douches to your home game. |

that doesn't mean there needs to be a rule though. you should be able to leave whenever.
ps: tell the lady in the trip Aces v boat hand to read up on bet-sizing. |

While you didn't have a written rule, there are such things as unwritten rules of proper etiquette. I wouldn't invite guys like that to my home game. |

I should state that the guy is actually a really nice guy (although not in this instance). He is just clueless about this i guess. Some people just don't get it. I think for my next game, I will print out RROP and on the cover I'll write in my house rules, and make sure everyone is familiar with them. When that guy sees the new time announced cash-out rule he's gonna feel like a piee of crap (if he doesn't already, which i don't think he does because he's clueless about it) |

His name was Doug. Doug was a friend of a friend.
Dougs nickname was a word that also starts with the letters Dou***.
Doug was talked to (by me) several times, not only for his "hit and run" playing, (there were times he would double up in the first hour, and cash in and leave) but also for his "in your face" post hand behavior. He would often win a pot, jump from his chair, point at the loser and say things like, "I put you on that hand, I'm the best player at this table!"
Doug doesn't play with us anymore.
And the friend that originally invited him still apologizes to this day for having ever brought him over. Even though Doug was actually an above average poker player, our games are a lot more fun without him.
There is no posted "rule" against his antics, but it's my house, and I simply didn't enjoy the big bag of drama he always brought to the table. |

And he respects other players after the hands (he really is a nice guy). I have noticed him slow roll once though, very annoying.
We have a guy who has played twice who is a friend of my regulars. He is never invited, but every time we have a game, the regular guy comes up and asks me me if it's ok for his friend to come play. What am I supposed to say to my friend here? "Well, the rest of us have talked about it, and we think your best friend is a d-bag. No he can't come." It puts me in an awkward position. I've actually decided the best way to deal with it, and remain friends with the regular, is if he isn't a reg anymore. I don't think either of them will be coming to our next game. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
