Last night at a home game a player (player 1) showed his cards (by accident) to the only other player in the had (player 2). The board had 2 Aces, Five, Ten and a Queen. Player 2 and player 1 both had a Ace. Before player 1 showed his cards to player 2, player 1 bet 10,000 THEN showed player 2 his cards again by accident. Player 2 had player 1 beat with a higher kicker card. We decided to stop any betting after the cards were shown and player 2 got the chips let in the pot. Was that the right call??
If it's a tournament, player 1's hand is dead upon exposure unless player 1 and player 2 are the last two players in the tourney.
If it's a cash game, player 1's hand remains live and the betting remains open, so player 2 can do what he wants.
See Excelsior's thread below for more on this.
That said, if I were running a friendly tournament I would probably remind player 1 not to be so sloppy and allow the betting to remain open rather than killing the hand.
