Checking down..

Is there a general rule regarding winning the pot when a hand is checked down on the river? Do both players have to open their cards? And do you have to show both cards to win the pot?

Re: Checking down..

Both players opening cards? I say no, you only have to show if you want the pot.

Have to show both? of course. you always must table both cards in holdem to claim the pot.

I know you must show both cards to claim the pot. But what happens when it is a showdown between 2 players. Player A shows one card and it is good enough to win. Player B mucks his cards without showing. I was saying he had to show both cards to claim the pot. Player A said it did not matter he mucked his cards and scooped the pot. He asked whats happens to the pot if I don't show my cards ? Nobody knew.

Re: Checking down..

Exact rules as I understand them: The last player to bet/raise (or the first to check) is required to show both cards. The remaining players may show none, one, or both cards. In order to win the pot, they must show both cards. Any player who has not folded must show both cards if requested by any other player at the table.

Re: Checking down..

In order to rake a pot in my games, you must show both cards. Period.

If you're ashamed of the cards you play, maybe you shouldn't have played them.

Re: Checking down..

All kinds of opions. Here are my opion. First it does not matter who the bettor or raiser was in the last round of betting. It is the last round that is important for showdown. If it is checked, then playerss should open their cards in order after the button. I have seen this so many times in casinos where beginners do not want to be the first to show and argue that the other player bet first in last round should show first but dealer always makes them show in order after the button.

If you show one card and everyone else mucks their card then you should win the pot because you are the last one left with live cards. Of course any other player have the right to demand to see both cards. Having said that, in any game I play I always ask to see both cards before I muck just to make sure he does not have SOOTED A's.

My 2 cents worth.

Even if it's folded to you?

I'd call...since he mucked, the other card doesn't have to be shown. He had the option to see his cards and he gave it up as did everyone else

Don't know why but it made me think of my Tahoe trip... my good friend in a ~$150 pot in 2-3 NLHE with FIVE at showdown and him first to act mucked his 22's only to see A high take it down

You must show BOTH cards to win a pot. NO EXCEPTIONS. So, do, both players have to show? Not if you know that your not going to win, unless you were the last to bet, then you are the first to show.

So that someone doesn't pile on, there are rules that could be brought in where both players are required to show the cards. I thought in reading this question, that situation did not apply.

Re: Checking down..

I know this is a bit off topic, but still kind of applies to the theme...

A very frustrating play from last night, that made me get up from the table and take a break.

3 players left pre-flop. Me, a short stack (kind of annoying guy that everyone was trying to bust out) and finally a pretty tight but regular player.

I'm sitting on:

I had raised the 50 cent blind to $3.00 from first position into the short stack who called.

Tight player raised to $6.00, I called the additional $3.00 and short stack goes all in for a total of $10.00. TIght player called and I evened it out with a call for a pot that is now about $32.00.

Flop comes:

I check the action to tight player, who checks back.

Turn card comes:

At this point I only have second pair with a good kicker, and a gut shot straight draw, but the focus seems to be (or so I thought) to check it down to challenge the short stacks hand.

River comes:

I check to tight player, who GOES ALL IN for about $27.00.

I stop and think, think really hard. "Why would he do this?" The only reason I can think of is that he's trying to warn me that he has short stack beat, telling me in essence, "I've got the hand, lay it down." Or if there was a decent side pot that I wanted to take a stab at. At least that's the reasons I would consider make a move like that.

Remember at this point there is NO SIDE POT except for tight players all-in.

I lay down my Queens. Tight player takes his all-in bet back.

Short stack shows:

For a pair of sevens.

Tight player turns over:

Short stack triples up, and tight player loses.

I jumped up from the table and said, "What the hell were you doing? I had him beat! Why didn't you check back?"

He says to me, "I was trying to get you out of the hand because my hand wasn't that strong and I wanted to make the play heads up against the all-in."

I verbally abused him for a few minutes asking him, "Was that something you heard from Vince on TV? Do you know why, or better yet WHEN you should be doing this type of move, or did it just seem cool to do?"

Once I explained to him the purpose of checking down a hand against an all-in, he said something like, "Yeah, I guess that makes sense."

I badgered him about making a move that just for the sake of making a move not understanding why he should make a move like that.

I wasn't tweaked about the money, just about the improper bet on his part.

I sat out for about 10 minutes to cool my jets.

Thanks for letting me vent...
