Chips: 1,006 | | | Rules and Regs on Larger Home Games Okay...I'm hosting my first "larger" home tourney with an expected 30 some odd people, some who haven't played in anything but a $5 buy-in at a drinking party and some who play at local B&M casinos on a regular basis. The inexperience players often act out of turn, don't make correct size rasies in accordance with the blinds, and just make some crazy calls at times(not much I can do about that one though). What I need some advice on is should there be an actual set of rules written out about acting out of turn, etc. to reference if there is a problem. Also, what type penalties should be inforced on these novice players if they make a mistake during play???
Also, if anyone has any advice on rules that go along with misdeals during a tourney of this size would be great also. For example, if a card is flipped up during the dealing of the hole cards should you redeal the whole hand, automatically deal them another card and burn the exposed one, or leave it up the the player to keep the card or get another??? Any other problems anyone has run into while hosting a tourney and how it was resolved would be great info.
One thought I had was to make a "committee" to make a decision on questionable hands that were not discussed before play started including myself and a buddy that is helping me set up the tourney and possibly some other players. Of course if one of these people was involved in the hand they would not be involved in the decision, probably even if they are at that table they would not be involved. Good idea, bad idea????
Any comments on any of these or other topics involved in hosting a larger tourney would be great!!! Thanks in advance! |

Chips: 55 | | | Re: Rules and Regs on Larger Home Games I run a weekly 30 person tourney with cash games mixed in. I have my own written house rules. I have them posted in this forum for your reference. IN ADDITION to my house rules, to handle things such as MIS DEALS... I use ROBERTS RULES OF POKER. They are generally considered the standard and used by most card rooms. I recommend that you print a copy of them, and modify them as you see fit if there is something you don't like. As for penalties, well my games are well run and I don't usually run into any problems like you pointed out. However, ocassionally a new internet player will show up and have a rude awakening to live play. As you will read in my house rules, if you are not familiar with them, you will be educated harshly. We aren't nice on fixing people on house rules. You will futhur read that repeated violations will require a poker rule class, by me, at my convenience before they play again. I have had many people come for a class anyway, for them to better run a game (I run this along with a dealing class). Continued violations after harsh upgrading and teaching results in expulsion from my place never to play again. There are some things like discussing a mucked hand during a hand in play that will get you kicked out immediately.. IE F**K SHOULDN'T HAVE FOLDED MY 52os I WOULDA FLOPPED A STRAIGHT. Well this isn't meant to be a rehash of my rules. But they are posted if you would like to use them for ideas or just use them as they are. Again google Roberts Rules and print a copy. Hope this helps.
Justin

Definitely make rules and have them posted. If possible give everybody a copy before you start. When I pass them out I review the heavy hitters (bet size, pot splashing, acting out of turn) the rest is up to them. I tell them to read them, then if they don't, and have a problem too bad.
When I get a chance I will add more to this... |

And definitely print up a bunch of copies of the standard rules you want to follow and have people read them as they mill around doing the buy-in and such. I think the first few times you have to expect that novice players will make some errors--muck out of turn, flip over cards too early, and so on. Just correct them, make sure they understand what they did, and move on.
As far as dealing if one card is flipped up during the deal, I say keep on dealing as if it didn't happen then give what would have been the burn card to the player that got the card flipped. Flipped card becomes the initial burn card. You can certainly go other routes as you mentioned, but this I think this method keeps the game moving along the best. Regardless of which method you choose, stick to it once you go with it.
I'd also highly recommend getting some type of software, beit tournament director, tournament manager, or whatever. It makes the whole process of worrying about blinds, managing the money and payouts, and all that administrative type work much easier.
Big tournies are a lot of work, but also a ton of fun. Good luck and have fun with it. |

give a warning first, maybe two. Give everyone the same amount of warnings, novice or pro.
