Technically, he might have folded his hand when he threw his cards in. If his cards touched any of the community cards, muck, or even the pot, the dealer would be well within his/her rights to declare his hand dead and award the pot to the other player.

Around here, the dealers say to protect your cards until the pot has been pushed...

It depends on the game and the players. I finally made a house rule at my games that the cards speak - always. (This becomes very important when you're dealing with inexperienced players and get into games with wild cards - which I do at my social home games).

If I'm playing with my poker buddies, that I've been playing with for years and years... then this kind of dicking around isn't just accepted, it's encouraged.

So if this guy was "new" to your circle, or that's just generally not accepted, then you probably should'nt have done that. As "uncool" as it may have been, your cards still make you a winner.

Cards do speak. I personally don't mind slow rolling a hand if it is just a friendly game, or low stakes, but if you are playing for cash it shouldn't be done.

If you are hosting, put it in your rules, Cards Speak no matter what the person says their hand is.

We always play casino rules. Cards speak, if cards hit the muck they are dead, over chip is a call unless a raise is announced, no string bets, play in turn, table stakes (in cash games), etc. It does keep things consistant. You can always have house rules, but I prefer to see things done as a casino.

We play a lot of SHOE - so in Omaha Hi/Lo even an experienced player can miss call their hand - cards speak is the best way to play.

Generally it should be cards speaks when no wild cards are use. In games with wild cards, it should be whatever you declare.

Except in friendly game where you are on good term and know everyone well and you are just fooling around with your buddy, you should not slow roll. While it is not forbidden, it is bad sportsmanship.

That's always a tough one. I agree with the logic of this but the fact that there's not a 'house' can make this ugly. If someone going for the low doesn't notice a winning mini-flush for example, whoever points it out after the fact is still likely to upset the person who thought they had won the high. Cards speak is good in theory, but it's still possible for everyone to miss something or for only one person at the table to see the error and have to identify it (or choose not to?).

Most of people I play with are pretty good card players - in fact it would be nice to play with fish occasionally - so a missed called hand is not common, especially on the high end.

Usually it is two people with a low and one them is counterfeited so the other person actually has the better low - though it does not appear so at first. i.e. A 2 vs 3 4 with a board 567K2 - 3 4 has the better low (plus a 7 high straight for the high). A 2 is counterfeited and has a 7652A and 3 4 has a 65432. A 3, would of course be the nut low with that board.

Still cards speak takes all the mystery away and makes for a consistant game. Even when I used to play all the crazy wild card games, we played cards speak.
