This is a classic line that I've heard more than once during my career. Usually it's someone in the wrong and they try to deflect what they did wrong and say that. Or the'll toss another fine nugget like "why don't you catch the real criminals." Normally I'll just ignore it but sometimes I'll run with it. I'll tell them that I was bored and had nothing better to do. Then they'll tell me to get the drug dealers, prostitutes, gang bangers, ect. I'll try to explain that we have other officers addressing those problems and we'll go from there. Most of these encounters are when we are conducting traffic enforcement, a menial job that has to be enforced. Though we'll hear it when enforcing other minor transgressions.
jamby I'm not trying to insult you or demean your post but somebody has to address a complaint, violation or in this case illegal gambling. It would be in my opinion that someone ratted out the poker club. Someone either lost some considerable amount of money, or a wife or girlfriend got pissed off at their man, for either playing too much or losing too much money and called the police. There could be a number of reasons why they decided to investigate it besides that the club too a rake too. Either way, I wouldn't want to be invovled in the raid, but if I was I hope they had some sweet chips.
To me this would be a lot of paperwork for something like this and in the end nothing will happen criminally, besides the guy with the gun. The owner could lose his license but it all depends on how much juice he has in the community.
Oh and to answer your question, yes I normally have better things to do but I'm addicted to poker chips and this site.
