The House of Representatives Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime passed Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte's anti-Internet gambling legislation recently, marking the bill for further debate by the full House Judiciary Committee.
Known as the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, H.R. 4777 was introduced in February by Goodlatte to "crack down on the growing problem of illegal offshore gambling as well as illegal gambling that crosses state lines over phone lines and Internet technologies."
According to Goodlatte, "The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act is a strong anti-gambling bill that also protects the rights of States to determine what is – and is not – prohibited within their borders."
Gambling online is currently illegal in the United States, with most Internet gambling firms headquartering their operations in offshore locals where Internet wagering is legal, such as Costa Rica, Gibraltar, and the Isle of Man.
Reports indicate that Internet gambling is a $12 billion industry, with approximately $6 billion coming from players based in the United States. |
