'New poll finds nearly 75% of Americans oppose ban of Internet gambling'

[Summary: Politicians should stay the hell away from citizens. We don't need no stinkin' Nanny State!]

From pokerlistings.com:

New poll finds nearly 75% of Americans oppose ban of Internet gambling

1:35 PM, Tuesday, April 4, 2006
by Lianne Elias

The Poker Players Alliance, a pro-poker grassroots organization with more than 20,000 members in the United States, renewed its objection to online gambling prohibition today, highlighting a new survey by ICR market research, an independent market research supplier, which finds nearly 75% of Americans oppose moves by Congress to ban Internet poker. The results of the March 29, 2006, survey have been re-printed below.

"The new poll results are a clear illustration of the public's feelings on this issue. Simply put, people don't want their member of Congress telling them what they can and cannot do in their own home -- especially when it comes to a game that's as all-American as jazz or basketball," said Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance.

At a roundtable panel discussion held by the Poker Players Alliance today, three of poker's most famous faces -- Howard Lederer, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, and Greg "Fossilman" Raymer – together with Radley Balko of the Cato Institute and Bolcerek, each explained why efforts to ban online gambling are misguided.

"We are here today to speak about the growing threat to poker as it relates to the online game," said Bolcerek. "We are here to defend the game and express our opposition to Congress' efforts to kill the sport and restrict our civil liberties."

Survey Questions & Results:

Question 1: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
5% 90% 4.5% 0.4%

Question 2: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker in Las Vegas?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
5.5% 90.7% 3.3% 0.5%

Question 3: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker in Casinos on Indian Reservations?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
8.3% 86.6% 4.6% 0.5%

Question 4: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker for charitable fundraisers?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
8.1% 86.9% 4.4% 0.6%

Question 5: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker on the Internet?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
18% 74.2% 7.4% 0.4%

Question 6: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker in the privacy of your own home?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
3% 94.7% 1.8% 0.5%

Question 7: "Do you believe the federal government should be managing Americans' gambling behaviors on the Internet?"
Yes No Don't Know Refused
26.9% 66.1% 6.4% 0.6%

The results of this survey reflect a randomly selected group of 964 adults. Those selected were read a series of questions and asked to respond with "yes," "no," or "I don't know."

I would be for banning internet gambling if all other live gambling was legalized.

I'm against the government sticking their nose into anything I decide to do with my time and money. And I say that as a person who has never done any form of online gambling to date.

Thanks (and thanks also for the other note you sent). I agree that the individual responses were interesting, especially as concerns the difference in percentages between those who wanted no inteference with private (live) gaming, vs those who seemed to not mind it so much if the government got involved in internet gaming.

Sorry, but a government that thought the CAN-SPAM act was A Good Thing is the last group of folks I trust with what I do on the 'net.

I dislike government control of most things however if I had to choose which was legal ... I would choose live poker versus online.

Re: 'New poll finds nearly 75% of Americans oppose ban of Internet gambling'

online poker, and slots/BJ/Craps/video poker IMHO are 2 different things..

Online poker, you have a chance at your own odds to win or lose. But in casino games your living to house rules and a high house win percentage.

They should ban casino games, Or at least make the Online sites pay a Fee to helps schools, or poor people eat, or something..

kinda OT, But im bothered by all these ban threads :\
