Ok me and a friend were discussing the idea of opening up a card house in our town. We are not really sure about the legality of this. Does anyone know the regulations for card houses in Minnesota? Just wondering if it is ok for us to open one and just take a 5 or 10% rake on hands.

Just 5-10%? I wouldn't play there. Thats rediculus. But, it doesn't matter since it is no way near being legal.

But as in any state, it would be a big help to have a state rep or two on your side. Even then it's pretty unlikely you will ever open. I assume you are talking about a LEGAL establishment.

ya after researching it we have come to the conclusion that it is illegal . Would have been fun though. I got the 5 or 10% rake idea because the casino near us is 10% so I figured that was standard. What is a good rake?

The Minnesota Gaming Control Board can probably answer those questions for you. You might be able to find the answers to your questions at http://www.gcb.state.mn.us/ or you can call them on Tuesday morning.

What you're proposing sounds like a licensed gaming establishment for profit, and as such, I'm sure there are probably permits, licenses, and the like that you will have to obtain, in addition to security issues that must be met.

A good rake depends on if your playing in the game or running the game LOL. Here at the casino I play at they take 10% max $3 dollars, so $20 dollar pot they take $2, any pot over $30 they just take $3. This is limit games, never played no limit cash game at a casino, but I would think they would all have a max rake. I think the vegas casinos I've read about do $4 max rake's.

In higher limit games in California cardrooms, they don't have a rake, but rather a table charge by the half hour (e.g. $5-12 per player per half hour)

True, but I don't think I'll be playing at those limits any time soon. But you never know. Heck, the highest limit they have where I've been playing is 6/12 limit. Usually will only have one table going if they open one. There is another casino here that has higher limits but the games are much harder from what I've been told, although the low limit tables are probably about the same everwhere really.

I have played mostly NL in casinos with the time rake being 5 or 6 bucks per half hour depending on the game (1-2 vs. 2-5) or the buy-in for that game (i.e., I have played in 1-2 games that are the same size as 2-5 games with rakes usuall being about 6 per half for those, with smaller 1-2 game raking only 5 per half). Regardless, the time rake works out to your benefit in these NL games (especially if you have an efficient dealer). Its also very funny how some of the places I play only have the auto-shuffler in the games that are pot-raked and they leave the dealer to shuffle in the time rake games... Very interesting...
