I always wondered about this. When someone places a large bet or moves all in and there's stacks of chips, is there a "proper" or standard way the're suppsoed to be stacked and counted?
Obviously we're not talking about splashing the pot here.
It seems that someone always needs to catch a miscount.
I have never heard of and I don't think there is a proper to stack chips and count them. I guess it would be easiest to put them in stack where the denom's either add up toa number divisable by 10(or 100 or 1000 depending on how high) or by 5. Ex:
Stack $1 chips into stacks of 10 for $10 or 5 for $5.
What I usually see that works best is to stack chips in piles that relate to (1) either the big blind amount, or (2) something easily counted and understood.
For example in a 10/20 game, it makes sense to stack red $5 chips in piles of 4 or 8 if you are betting some multiple of the BB. For example to bet $100, I see people putting a large stack of 20 ($100) in their hand, then counting off 5 stacks of 4 (or 4 stacks of 5). Of course some people just push a stack of 20 over the line and let it spill, but that's not good manners IMO.
If you're raising someone in a limit game, I also see people holding 2 stacks of the limit bet in one hand, like you're going to shuffle them, and pushing them across the line like that.
I think it's the dealer's responsibility in a B&M game to make sure the pot's right. And the more you can help the dealer count quickly, the better for everyone.
Stack them however you need to to keep track of them. I always attempt to know what I have in front of me so I can determine how I am standing in relation to the pot/blinds.

All sounds logical. I normally try to stack my chips in stacks that make sense so 1) is let's me know how much I have at a glance and 2) it's easier to break off the amount I need.
I usually stack mine as high as I can, occasioanally breaking them down for a quick count. I love building "the tower" and just being able to look over the top.
