How fast can you shuffle?

Spiff's thread just made me decide to time myself shuffling. . .

From a squared deck set on the table in front of you (assumes the scramble has been completed), what is your best time to perform the following sequence?
  • Riffle
  • Riffle
  • Box (five-section)
  • Riffle
  • Riffle
  • Box (five-section)
  • Riffle
  • Cut and complete cut onto cut card

My fastest time was 41 seconds, including 'washing the deck' first. I tried to time myself just now, but all I have with me here are Copags and they slide around too damned much.

I am so fast that it can't register on a stop watch!!!!

Seriously though, you could probably use a sun dial to time me, its the main reason why I have two decks running at a table, gives me plenty of time to shuffle!!

IMHO I think this is a little excessive. This is what I do and its fast...

Riffle Riffle box riffle cut

More than sufficient.

Justin

Actually, four or five riffles are the bare minimum to even hope for randomness to begin, but between five and seven seems be enough: http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/art_of...n_at_poker.htm

BTW, it takes me about 21 seconds to perform the sequence I describe.

What does box and riffle mean? Is riffling when you lay the cards flat on the table and mix them up like they do in the casino or is it another name for shuffling and if so where did that term come from.

I have no clue what "box" is.

I believe it's called washing or scrambling when you spread all the cards out and mix them around. There's another thread floating around somewhere where boxing is explained. Deckard did a great job putting it together. Check under Shuffling Procedure I think.

In our home game, about 5 minutes... because that's two hands worth of shuffling!

From the http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/art_of...n_at_poker.htm site:

Quote:
In other words, after six riffle shuffles, a pack is still visibly ordered. But after the seventh, it suddenly becomes random.

The presence of this cut-off turns out to be important. Card shuffling, when imperfect, is a good example of something called a "Markov chain". This is a random process in which the future depends only on the present, not on the past.

Can anyone tell me what these two items have in common?
