This whole situation reminds me of when I tried to get some people at a party to play Monopoly by the real rules, i.e. no money in center for landing on Free Parking, properties are put on auction if the person who lands on it doesn't want to buy it, houses must be built evenly, etc. It blew everyone's mind that I actually read the real rules and wanted to play by them. But even though they now had the opportunity to learn to play the right way, everyone suddenly looked at me like I was the bad guy and decided they would still play according to their "house rules". I've seen this same sort of attitude in other subject matters as well.

So my point is, there is something inherent in many peoples' nature that makes them feel uncomfortable when confronted with new ideas or when shown a better way of doing things, which then leads to great resistance to change. I don't think there is any way to avoid this--some folks just are this way, and some folks are not.

Wow!
not saying that I "know" how a poker game should go... but, when the guys I play with get together, it can get a little rough. With drinking and ? people may lose track of how many raises etc. One of the first things I did when I initially got with this bunch was pointed out the logic of keeping your bet in front of you until the round of betting concluded, then mixing the pot to start the next round. They were sending all bets into one central pot. Ironically, once I mentioned it, the transition was near immediate. Other players just hadn't been willing to say it... yet. Once that one change was made, within the next couple of games it had become very organized, and a pleasure to play and watch both. Of course, any suggestions I have made were casual, and open to further elaboration.. you know -not wanting to piss of the host or the group.

the issue of stacking bets is one of my pet peeves. most of the players in my local game didn't understand what I was talking about....until they actually sat down in a professional cardroom.

It seems homegame trip to the local cardroom (if you have one) can cure some of the frustrations of "knowing" the right way. It's amazing how many of my friends didn't even know you could play poker in Vegas (much less the LA cardrooms 200 miles closer) until the WPT.

things I hate about my local "neighbor's" tourney:

--split between limit and NL. 1st part limit(rounds 1-5), 2nd part NL(rounds 6-

--rebuy schedule means that you only get 5 BB bets at the time of rebuy. no add-ons.

--dead-button/dead-blind disagreements all the time. house places more importance on the button moving instead of the (rather large) blinds that are skipped.

--players are NOT moved tables until the tables are combined. this is the worst one! generally, we have 20-24 players, split between 3 tables. the last time I played, we had 22 ppl...8, 7 and 7. When it got down to two tables, table 1 had 6 players left, so table 2, when pared down to 4 players....STOPPED PLAYING!!!....i was like "wtf?" but it was my first time playing with a group that had been playing for several years. The rule was, we played until there were 8 players remaining for the final table. The idea of moving a player from table 1 to table 2 was preposterous to them, along with the hand-for-hand idea. This was a T2000 tourney, and the blinds at this point were 500-1000 and it STILL WASN'T NL!!!

things I like about that tourney:

--decent payouts (buy-in and rb were $100)

that's it. I played 3 times and won't play again...too many disagreements for a 45 minute drive.

I have never played at another home tourny other then the ones that I run. I think one of the reasons is that I would get frustrated at soe of the little things that might or might not hapen durning the game.

I used to play in a cash game that was alittle un organized and it drove me nuts to the point I figured I would just host my own.

Although its not your place to make the rules or how its run you could always suggest better ways to do things, who knows maybe they will listen to you
