Chips: 10 | | | Do you prefer using a 50 cent chip for a cash game? I'd like to get a set together for a .25/.50 NL game for about 8 players...$20 to $25 buyin. In trying to figure out what chips are needed and what to hand out for starting stacks, I see that a lot of people use .25, .50, 1.00 and maybe 5.00 if needed...and some use .25, 1.00 and 5.00 chips. I think that I've got things worked out, except if I want to get a .50 chip or not.
If given the option, would you prefer using a .50 chip, or would you just go right to the 1.00?
If you were trying to limit the number of chips in your set, would skipping the .50 chip take anything away from the game?
Thanks... |

Chips: 572 | | | 3 denoms will be plenty, I figure:
20 .25 per player
15 $1 per player
and for rebuys
5 $5 per player
to start. If it gets wild, another 5 $5 per player might come in handy. |

Whenever I see a denom chip that is only twice the previous chip, I think it's a waste. For example, 50¢ when you have a 25¢ chip, or $10 vs. $5, and $50 vs. $25. I'd rather get more chips of fewer denominations and have a more flexible set. I prefer chips that are 4x or 5x the previous chips -- like $1, $5, $25, $100. Or 25¢, $1, $5, $25. (OK, there's probably an exception where you play a specific game, like 10/20 or 3/6. In those cases you should have a $10 chip or a $3 chip.) |

Chips: 606 | | | There's no need to have more types than necessary. Three types should be enough, and then it would be best with $0.25, $1 and $5.

Chips: 1,861 | | | I don't have any .50 chips, my NLHE .25/.50 game runs fine.
I *would* buy some .50 chips if we played 1/2 limit all the time and that would be the only chip on the table. Big pots mean big action!
conversely, if I ran a 10/20 game I would not have $10 chips because the pots would look small with the one redbird for the SB and a couple $10 chips out there.... I'd just use $5. $10 chips would be great for a 20/40 game.
I may get some "pink" ($2.50) chips somewhere along the line to play 5/10 limit with.
I think limit games are best if there is only one denomination of chip on the table, NL games are best with 3 denoms. 0.25/1/5 in my game. In a 1/2 NLHE game I would use 1/5/25.

Chips: 707 | | | I'd prefer to have a .25 chip along with some 1's and 5's. |

Chips: 1,513 | | | These thoughts really apply to many games, even freezeouts. So why didn't you guys say this stuff before I invested in those crappy chips with all those crazy colors???
Then why did all of you let me go ahead and make a totally metal set on top of the other stuff???
Man why do I keep reading this forum??....Oh because I love it!!!
J/k about the other stuff! hehe |

Chips: 1,861 | | | well, All_in... freezeouts are different. I start with either two or three colors, but I have one or two for coloring up later. Say we start with 20ppl @ 20 green 20 black and 5 purple. Once we're down to five people the average stack would be 100 green, 100 black and 20 purple. Yeah, that looks great on TV but it's a HOLY PITA to actually play like that. Big bets always get knocked over and it slows the whole game down as the guy who's supposed to act now is actually stacking 100 chips from the last pot.
if (green = 25 and purple = 500) then (1 purple = 1 stack of green)
