Just a Nasty Hand

Huge Bad Beat right here:

We are playing $5 Dealers Choice 5 Card Omaha H/L 8O - we call it Big Mitt. I limp in with A248Q double suited... not a great hand but I limped to see a flop. Flop comes down 448 - Great I flopped a boat and have the nut low draw. Player one UTG bets and player two raises the pot which was which I called everyone else folds. The turn brings a Q another great card for me as the boat just got bigger and I still think I am golden. P1 bets Player two raises the pot again so at this point the pot is about $400 and I am thinkin WTF is goin on here? So I call the pot size bet and reraise the pot $800 myself.. at this point the pot was getting to be a monster and I think I have the hand. Player 1 calls all of his money $350 and i get player two to lay down his 8's full of fours(little did I know he was beating me). Players 1 had 2 3 5 10 10 in his hand. When I see his hand I know I have him beat both ways, if a low card comes I have nut low and nut high and scoop the pot. If a high card comes I scoop the pot. The only card that can beat me here is a 10. Yep you guessed it, he hits the case 10 on the river and lose a $1200 something pot. Another player told me he had the other 10 so this guy was basically drawing to POSSIBLY win half of the pot for low and hits the one outer the whole damn pot. UNF@#$KING beliveable

Yeah, crap like that messes with your head for a while. I hope this guy is paying you off most of the time so you're able to recoup this little setback.

I woulda been right in there betting my stack with you. Tough beat.

Yeah, live poker is rigged.

Actually, when the Q hit the board, I would have been worried about someone with QQ, but you made an awesome play representing that you had them.

Never heard of 5-card Omaha either--with so many cards dealt out, isn't this kind of action almost expected? How many players got dealt in? Even in regular 4-card Omaha, the small deck stub (only 12 cards!) at a full table seems to make for very weird boards, IMHO.

Omaha 8/b can be a cruel game. My initial reactions to the hand: You maybe overplayed your hand(eventhough my hindsight is 20/20). You coldcalled a bet and a raise with the second nuts and a nut low draw(to which you could be quartered or worse). The Q on the turn lowers your high hand to the fourth-nuts(which technically could be tied at that point as well) and you still only have a nut low DRAW - then you pull the trigger after a bet and a raise in front of you(again). You are very likely beat here with a weak end of a boat and an unmade low. You were lucky not to have anyone out there with A2 and/or a better boat... but you did have position on the best hand - you two had him pinched - you were lucky there.

All that said, you did get very unlucky at the end to a one outer. And only you know what you were thinking as well as your reads on your buds hands, ets. But that really sucks - I've been there. I flopped quad 3's on a 3h 3s 4s board - the turn was a high card and the river was the 2s. My buddy rolls over his hand and says, "flush" and I say, "you hit a one-out-hogger... you have the steel wheel"(As 5s). Man did that suck, I made a low too so he could've only hit like 6 outs for half and one card for the hogger. Pisser was he didn't even realize he had a mortal lock on the whole pot and didn't raise me - then he tables his cards and I tell him what's-what. Only real bad beat of my life.

I'm no expert by a long shot, I just thought I'd share some thoughts for you to ponder and add a bad beat of my own in hopes of easing the pain.

One last thing, I can't remember the exact details, but I've read somewhere before that if the stacks are deep enough you would be correct to laydown and made nut low AND a made straight flush in that game... under the right conditions. Course, I can't remember the last time I laid down ANY nut hand in my home O/8 game, but we don't play that deep either.

Better luck next time Mr. Meaner.

These guys will bet the pot on a second to nut low draw - so I don't always put enough emphasis on them have a great hand. I did however make it all back plus some that night.

I won a $1500 pot later in the evening. I have A2357 suits not important Flop is Q 4 6 - So I have the nut low draw and open end st8. Turn is the perfect card 8. Made the nut low and have the st8. I have postision and everyone is raising me...LOL I call the bets to make sure the boat flush or higher straight don't come on the river. River was a os J. People are betting in to me. I raise the pot as much as I could and get two callers who are playing a low hand only. I win half the pot and 1/3 of the rest of the pot. Got into the game for $1600 but ended up cashing out $2500 so I made a little on the night.

Mr. M, just being curious, who are all these people with all this money to burn? I can see that you and your family are well-off with you own business, but who are these other guys who seem to regularly contribute to the Meaner bankroll?

I have a friend of mine who owns a Dry Cleaning business who always is good for several hundred. Other than that they include Local business owners, a university professor, a guy who sells steel, a couple lawyers, a banker, a couple of car salesmen, a few oilfield type workers and not sure about the rest. We only have about 12-14 of us that play in the "big game" which is our pot limti games. I really don't like to play in that game because of the high stakes nature of it and the risk of losing alot of money. Like I said I was into the game for $1600 and dug my way out of the hole but it took about 20hrs of play time.

We started with 14 players Sat night @ 7:00pm and finshed with 5 players Sun @ 3:00pm
