advice on taking a rake

so we are taking over a poker table at a local bar. they just run single table touneys right now, but we are going to run a cash game. city ordinance restricts us to a 20 limit on any given street.

so we will play 2-20 spread limit as the main game but will be flexible to what the players want to play.

the question i would like some advice on is how to take the rake without having all the 1 dollar chips come off the table////

any advice would be great, i dont believe we can do a time collection so that is out

thanks, steven

Re: advice on taking a rake

Do as many card rooms and casinos do.
Use a drop chip.
Dealer pulls singles into his / her tray, then drops a drop chip in the box rather than the chips in play. The chips pulled into the tray can then be used / put back into play for rebuys, etc. for players at the table.

Re: advice on taking a rake

Or you could drop $5 chips from the pot instead of having a special drop chip. Collect the $1 chips and keep them to the side. When there are five, exchange them for a $5 chip from the pot before dropping them into the rake box.

Re: advice on taking a rake

A third for - Drop a larger chip

Pull your rake as usual after each street and then before you drop it at the end of the hand try and color it up to as few chips as possible. MGM Grand has a $3 drop chip, I think Luxor uses a $4, MGM Foxwoods has a $2 chip that will probably get some use as a drop chip as well. Depending on the rake percentage and how big your game is you can decide if you need to add a drop chip to your rack or if the $5 chip is enough.

Dan's 2 cents

Drop chips are easy. Pull the in-play chips back into the tray, and drop. It makes for a smooth game.
