Cool Black Jack as a home game?

Hey Chip Talkers,

This is my first post. This may be a crazy question but, is there a way to play Black Jack in a home game environment? Can it be done by rotating the dealer?

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

Years ago, we would take turns dealing. We would use a 6 deck shoe and everyone dealt a shoe and then passed the shoe to the left when they were done.

sunderB, Did you have a betting limit? Were there certain rules? and lastly was it any fun? Judging from the fact that you said 'years ago' leads me to think it wasn't worth the hassle to play again.

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

my game seems to degenerate into this by 8am.. or everyone just starts putting 10-20$ into the pot and we run the cards.. or we start playing 50$ for high card.. or start coinflipping

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

I run a BJ tournament between my main event and the "after game" on poker league day. We pay someone 10% of the prize pool to deal. I keep the but-in low and friendly and run it like the World Series of BJ on TV. We have a "have it your way" chip and "knock-out" cards. It's fun and a good way to get the poker out of your head before playing the next game.

We used standard casino rules, and typically everyone used the same limits. I always had fun with it, but what usually happened is that one person would get a cold "house" shoe and lose a bunch. In the long run the house or dealer has the edge, but they can hit some bad streaks in a short run like a single shoe.

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

You could pass banker duties around, but as soon as someone makes a wad of cash or someone gets put in the hole deep, it will lose much of the attractiveness as a home game. I say do it tournament style. I have usually accepted dealer duties in Ranman's game. You don't need KO cards, secret bets or replace a card options, but it does make it more fun.

Right. The math shows blackjack to be an enormously "streaky" game. You should not be surprised to see short term swings of 100x your average bet.

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

I used to run a blackjack tournament every week before we started playing poker.

Everyone would pay my sister $5 at the beginning of the night to deal. We would have games of 25 hands with a buy-in of around $20 per game. Usually pay top two. 7 players. We usually had around three games. They don't last that long.

In fact, some of the poker players want to bring it back. We'll See.

Re: Black Jack as a home game?

Ran it recently with a group bank. Had 7 players and everyone threw in $40 i.e. the bank started @ $280. Played a 50c-$5 table. Basically just hedged all bets ~15% b/c you're winning/losing 1/7 to yourself. It was great and kept someone from taking a bath. It would have been the case too as the shoe went south and we ended up breaking the bank right when we were ready to call it a night (played about 3.5 hrs). Everyone just left with what they'd won but we would have just split the bank 7 ways.

I went with mostly player friendly options. Here's my small table card I had laminated...

Friendly low stakes game so we didn't have to worry about the bank though with every one having a stake more attention was given to the dealer etc...

Worked out great.

Oh yeah... in case it wasn't obvious once the bank was set everyone just bought in for whatever they wanted and rebought as necessary. Also, we were playing until a set time so we didn't have any players leaving early issues.
