Do any of you hosting home games ever had someone bringing in outside chips to your game and you ended up short on your bank at the end of the session and ended up with extra chips? Doyle Brunson mentioned something like this happening in one of the games he played long time ago in his book "Poker Wisdoms" (I think it is called).
As far as I know, this has never been a problem at our home games (we have about 4 to 5 hosts). Our usual stake is $1/$1 NL.
Also, I would like to know how a host could protect himself, other than ordering custom, (i.e., one of a kind) chips.
I use custom chips so my problem is someone taking chips out of my game.

What is done around here sometimes is the banker keeps $5 for each person playing.
Another way to decrease any loss for this happening is use small denom chips, like all $1 and $5. That way if someone does sneak some in, they'll only be up $5 or so.
Listen for chip clink/clack when they're entering the room.
Custom chips are a more expensive but more fun option.
What chips are you using?
If they are the official 11.5 Dice chips, well anyone could bring those.
If you have labeled chips chances are you won't see too many extra chips.
If you have some Pharoh's well you can never have enough of those.
I play with Casbah Clubs, so I'm pretty sure this won't ever be an issue.
I also like it if new people to my game are friends of my friends - no random strangers. I guess if you're posting up your event/game and looking to fill seats, it's a little harder to screen who actually shows up. But, since it's in my house with my family and my stuff around, I like to be kind of choosy about who comes to play.
I'd be really really pissed if anyone tried cheating on any kind of scale.
Well, one option (that a lot of CTers employ) is to use chips that cost more than face value. Of course, then the problem reverses itself... and you need a solution to prevent people from walking OUT with your chips...
