tipping?

okay i don't know where else this would go but whatever. i was playing a tourney at my local "illegal" card room, and somehow i won the darn thing, anyways, i won $1900, my question is when u're in a tourney with professional dealers how much are you supposed to tip out when you cash?

p.s- i gave him 200 bucks, some said that was way too much

Re: tipping?

15% is 'recommended' in most card room tourneys that I've played in, but you're usually free to do whatever you choose. Just don't stiff them completely like Johnny Chan is alleged to do.

Re: tipping?

I think you tipped a good amount. I usually tip/ pot won but since it was a tourney $20-25 is fine....

Re: tipping?

Mike Caro had an article saying how much to tip. But I think that 10% is right on the high side, but still there...

I'll look for it...

Found it! Mike Caro on Tokes

Re: tipping?

I've only ever played cash poker at a casino on one occasion, and I tipped a few dollars out of each pot I won, and then $15 out of a huge pot ($700 - huge for me).

10% of that pot would have been $70. Unless the dealer had a gun pointed at my head, he wasn't gonna get $70 off me.

And for the record, I'd much rather they paid the dealers a living wage, upped the rake if need be, and banned tipping altogether.

I just don't understand tipping people for doing their job properly. It's not like the guy dealt me playable cards on purpose, and he wasn't exactly killing the table with repartee.

The best dealer I have ever seen, dealt the cards without error and was generally polite.

Isn't that their job?

I'm with you here. Well mostly. My cash game pots will use earn the dealer a buck or two. I've gotten to know the dealers pretty well. They work for minimum wage and tokes are expected for them to earn a living. Just like servers in our resturants in the US.

I'm not sure how but the casinos have managed to schlep that responsiblity off to the customers

I know we are on the same page here, it's that phrase 'tokes are expected' that really jars.

I've had dealers that mis-dealt, mis-read the cards, needed to call the floor for basic rule checks, and were pretty grumpy to boot, but still got a tip from virtually every pot.

Yeah, I'm guilty of toke those humps too. Must be nice to know that they can still get paid for being terrible.
