And for those not in the know, a "loon" or "looney" is a $1 coin in Canada, so named because it displays the picture of a great northern diver/common loon (a bird which somewhat resembles a duck)... The looney replaced the $1 bill in the late eighties. A "two-ney" or "toonie" is a $2 coin introduced in the mid-nineties... I have used both for ball markers in golf, though they are a little large for the task...

Loonie

Toonie
I name the loonie after our Prime Minster at that time. I don't play poker with them as I have chips but I think it would be fine. Also, I hate them. I wish we had our $1 and $2 bills back, they weight a ton when you get change. The idea of having a $5 fills me with dread.

Re: For all you North of the Border.

I have to admit, I sometimes catch myself flipping the top toonie in a stack of 4 or 5 when I'm waiting in line at the food truck outside my building... I can shuffle toonies pretty well, too... But since the loonie and toonie aren't the same size, they aren't that great as chips. I keep a roll of each (and of quarters) for cashing out our cash games, and keep all my other change through the week to make sure I always have enough.

ROFLMFAO at legend and 800over! You guys rock!

To snuffy: I can't speak for everyone else, but having so many coins really makes you think about trying to spend your change. I never have more than 4 pennies at any given time, 'cause everytime I buy something, I try to use as much change as possible. If the bill comes to $24.82, I'm right there to get 2 pennies ready, then a nickel (if I've got one), then 2 toonies, etc.

I think this is an OCD thing associated with scientists. Many science people I know do this, but very few others.

FWIW, I like the loonies and toonies. I really miss the utility of the two dollar coin now that I'm in the U.S. Stupid paper money is all ugly and impossible to distinguish.

Touché...

I think it's becoming a "guy thing" though, because otherwise there just isn't enough room in a guy's pockets.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, Canadians might've started the trend of teenagers wearing their pants around their knees... not because they thought it was cool at first, but because their pockets were full of change. Then footage of a big rap star performing on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV counterpart) aired in the US, and an epidemic was born!

"Hey man, I just used a bill to pick up a pack o' smokes and got 2 pounds o' change."

Re: For all you North of the Border.

Well, that couldn't be... a pack of smokes in Canada is like $9...
