Chips: 5,098 | | | Hosting vs. Playing A Game... Sorta a funny story...
A person who has been playing a couple years in my monthly home game finally got his "manroom" ready to host his own game. I agreed to join in a game and brought a buddy who also plays in my monthly game. I thought, "Wow, I get to go and just play for a change!" No set up, no break down, no host duties!
The person had seen what a difference oiling chips make when I showed him my Speakeasys a couple weeks ago. So proud of his newly purchased 11.5g "offical weight" ebay Clay chips that I guess he decided to oil his as well -- with Baby Oil. Oh my. The $8 program he bought off line to run the blinds was nice but if I typed out the blind progression I think some of the die hards on CT might have a heart attack. And finally the payout. I made it to heads up against the host and lost -- payout schedule for 6 people x $30 = $180 -- my cut $30, his cut $150. At this point I actually said out loud, "That's crazy." Oh well, at least I didn't have to clean up -- but I did offer to help!
So besides the funny story (at least I think so), my thought was this -- Have you ever hosted a game for the first time and found out just what a difference it is to play that role vs. just showing up and playing? If so, there be some things you learned or even more funny stories.
Finally, I too went through a learning curve so I do understand how these things happen. |

I prefer hosting my games. When I go to another friend's house, they all have dice or suited chips, paper cards, weird chairs, and nobody ever keeps track of the blinds. |

I got the "Ace", dealer position right off the start and from the first card I tossed I about chucked the deck out the door. Bee paper cards -- very well used at that! Oh man, I've become a bit of a snob about this stuff. CT, what have you done to me? |

I felt bad about his chips, but it took me totally off guard. |

I'm not saying he oiled them on purpose, but it sure would be a lot more funny!
I can't use paper cards anymore, ever since my first setup of Copags. I went to a bigger tournament at my friend's house, and one of the guys refused to play with the cards I brought (just standard index poker size red/blue 1546 Copags) and said his were "better" (An old casino deck from Harrah's) - he was the dealer, and misdealt the first hand when three of the cards stuck together |

Chips: 933 | | | Re: Hosting vs. Playing A Game... hmmm. was that payout decided up front? if so i would have made a suggestion to make that a little more balanced, at least 70-30. Oiling the ebay specials is killing me. i cant imagine it. i just recently used mineral oil on some of my new paulsons. i then used a cloth to dry them with before i put them away. took along time to do 650 chips, but i did it while playing in an online tourney. to think my wife says i cant multitask..
Not to thread jack, but you mentioned a tournament software program was used. Ive been looking for a good one, what do you use personally? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
