First-Timer: Colouring Up & Chip Race - The Simple Version

This weekend I running a NLHE tournament and for the first time I'll be colouring up the chips and performing chip races etc. This is mainly due to a new set of chips where I actually have enough 100 denom chips to colour up the 25 denoms.

The colouring up process seems easy enough, every player exchanges 4 25 denom chips for 1 100 denom chip once the blind levels render the 25 denom chips redundant. For example:

Starting Chip: $1500 (8 x 25; 8 x 100; 1 x 500)

Level 1: 25-50
Level 2: 50-100
Level 3: 75-150
Level 4: 100-200
Level 5: 150-300
Level 6: 200-400 (Colour Up & Chip Race)
Level 7: 300-600

Now the trick bit, the chip race itself for the odd chips. I've read the section at Home Poker Tourney and to be honest got a little confused i.e. Adding extra chips etc so I figured a simple version might be the order of the day for a first-time chip racer:

Bob, Jim, Pat and Sam exchange every 4 25 denom chips they have for a single 100 denom chip. But Bob has 3 left over 25 denom chips, Jim and Pat have 2 each and Sam a single 25 denom chip. Each player in seating order recieves one card from a shuffled deck all at once for every odd chip e.g. Bob get 3 cards, Pat and Sam get 2 cards each and poor old Sam gets just 1 card. The player with the highest card by rank and suit (Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs) gets all the odd chips and thr rights to exchange them for 100 denom chips. For example, the cards are dealt:

Bob :

Pat:

Jim:

Sam:

Both Jim and Sam share an Ace but Sam wins due to the suit tie-breaker i.e. Spades vs. Club and wins all the odd chips, 8 in total and then exchange them for 2 100 denom chips and the game can then continue.

How does that sound?

Should not Jim and Sam get one chip each?

Re: First-Timer: Colouring Up & Chip Race - The Simple Version

Yeah. Highest card gets one chip. Then take his cards away (no one can win more than one chip). Then next highest card gets the second chip.

Sometimes (due to table balancing, no-call/no-shows where you still post then remove the stack, etc.) you'll have an odd numer of odd chips...that is to say, in your example, instead of a cumulative 8 odd chips between the 4 players, they'll only have 7. In that case, you still round up and award 2 $100 chips for the 7 $25's...

Suggestion: Have the big stack at the table buy up all the small denoms (except for the odd leftovers). Then you can color up the big stack all at once (instead of ten smaller color-ups). Then do your race.

Suggestion 2: Just round up each person instead of racing. Its quicker.

We posted at the same time. Thanks for that, I think I'm slowly getting it.

Re: First-Timer: Colouring Up & Chip Race - The Simple Version

Racing is not a problem. Do it once and its a piece of cake. *BUT*, you are going to hafta explain it several times (especially to those who lose the chip), you hafta soil a shuffled deck of cards, and you hafta take the time to do it.

My suggestion, just round up. You'll thank me later.

To the people that know: What do they do at the WSOP? Local tournies, etc.? Never played a live tourney outside of a home game.

I'm sure others can answer better, as I've only played in one Live tournament at Sycuan. They raced off the chips with a the high-card method above. It took a few seconds, and chips were rounded up for the race (5 25 chips in, give out 2 100 chips)

Highest card gets all the odd chips? I just remembered, I'll have to check my Howard Lederer's Secerts to No-Limit Hold'em DVD as he provides a example of the chip race.

I routinely just pick up the bottom half (the undealt half) of the deck from th previous hand. I don't know if this is truely kosher or not, but it works for me.

I also try to color up two chip levels when I can. If somebody has 20 $25 chips, I just give them a $500. If they have 16, I may take the $25s and one $100 chip and give them a $500. It is quick and generally simplifies things. It's hit and miss, but in general this will allow you to color up with many fewer chips.
