Season 3 League Blueprint

I finally got around to finalizing my league details for the upcoming season. Current League membership is 12 players and here's the plan for season 3 (long):

•Season length – Season will be 14 games long and league night will be the 1st Saturday of every month and 2 tournaments will be played each league night; resulting in a 7 month season.

•Game – All games will be No Limit Hold ‘em tournaments and all but 2 of the 14 games will be freeze out tournaments (no rebuys) but tournaments #5 and #11 will be rebuy* tourneys.

•Buyin – A $5 league “fee” from each player’s buyin from each tourney game will be collected and will go towards the season-end payout. There will be 2 options for buy-ins this season and players can choose whichever buyin they prefer.

o Pot 1 buyin:
$30 buyin ($25 + $5) and all entrants will be eligible to participate in the payout of Pot 1 which will be calculated based on $25 per entrant and paid out to those players that finish “in the money”.

o Pot 2 buyin:
$50 buyin ($45 + $5) and these entrants are eligible to participate in the Pot 1 payout (if they finish “in the money”) and are also eligible to participate in the Pot 2 payout which will be based on the additional buyin of $20 per Pot 2 entrant. If more than 1 player from Pot 2 finishes in the money, Pot 2 will be distributed based on the payout schedule percentages...but if 1 or none of the Pot 2 entrants finish in the money, all of Pot 2 will be awarded to the highest finishing Pot 2 participant.

•Game Payout Schedule:
o 6-9 players = 67% for 1st and 33% for 2nd.
o 10-14 players = 57% for 1st, 28% for 2nd and 15% for 3rd.
o 15-20 players = 51% for 1st, 25% for 2nd, 14% for 3rd and 10% for 4th.

o Pot 2 payout will be calculated using above percentages for the number of Pot 2 entrants that finish in the money. In a 8 player game (for example), if two Pot 2 entrants finish in the money, the higher finishing player would receive 67% of Pot 2 and other player would receive 33% of Pot 2.

o All of Pot 2 will be awarded to the highest finishing Pot 2 entrant if only 1 or no Pot 2 entrants finish in the money.

•Season-end Payout – ALL/100% of league fees collected over the course of the season will be paid to the top 3 finishing players for the season (League organizer does not get paid a fee). The payout will be 57% for 1st, 28% for 2nd and 15% for 3rd.

•Season Scoring – – Each player’s best 8 results (out of the possible 15 tournaments) will be used to calculate a player’s total score and average. Players will be ranked based on the highest total score and average. Your scoring for each tourney game will be calculated based on 4 factors...
1) Your finishing postion
2) The number of players that played in that particular tournament
3) The Number of players that you personally eliminated
4) A deduction if you rebuy/addon in one of the rebuy tournaments

The calculation will be done as follows:

1st = 105 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
2nd = 85 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
3rd = 70 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
4th = 60 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
5th = 50 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
6th = 40 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
7th = 30 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
8th = 20 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
9th = 10 + (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
10th = (# of players x 2) + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys
11th and lower = 20 + 5 per player knocked out - 20 for rebuys

* Rebuy tourneys - Players will be allowed 1 rebuy during the first three levels or 1 add-on at the end of level three. All buyins will be for $30 (Pot 1 buyin only) and full rebuys will also be for $30.

Add-ons will be available at the end of level 3 and players will be allowed to buy back up to their starting stacks (but not allowed to exceed their starting stack). For a T10,000 tourney, every T1,000 in chips would cost/be worth $3 (T1,000/T10,000 = 10%...$30 x 10% = $3). Players can add-on in T1,000 increments, at $3 per T1,000, back up to their T10,000 starting stack. Money for the Add-ons will only be in $3 increments, so a player needing less than a full T1,000 increment would still have to pay $3 even if they are receiving less than T1,000. So a player with T1,400 at the end level 3 would be allowed to add-on up to T8,600 in chips for $27 or a lesser amount in T1,000 increments.

Re: Season 3 League Blueprint

Point system discussion:

I truly dislike the reverse point system because it allows lower finishes in games with bigger turnouts to have as many or more points as 1st place in games with not as many players. For example, In my 1st season I had a tourney with 14 players and a tourney with 10 players...and using the reverse point system, 5th place in the 14 player game got the same points as 1st place in the 10 player game. Although I think that a player should be rewarded for getting through more players, I think the example I used shows how the reverse point system can devalue 1st place with turnout fluctuations.

I want a point system to include a calculation where how many players in a particular tournament is factored in BUT not to the extent where lower finishing positions are easily being awarded more points than 1st place in other tournaments. I think the system above properly addresses my concerns with this issue. I do understand that many use the reverse point system with success, but I'm pleased to have finally settled on this point system.

I also considered that I do not want a huge variance of "available points" from one game to another because if a player is absent from a game that had a bigger turnout than usual, they are unfairly (IMO) penalized as they will not get the opportunity to ever earn that many points in any other tourney. Using the reverse point system, a player could earn 12 points for finishing 1st in a 12 player tourney...but if you miss that game and all the other games end up with turnouts of 7,8 and 9 players...that player missing the 12 player game would never have the opportunity to earn that many points in another game. Since absences and turnout can not be predicted, I want a system that doesn't place too much weight on turnout as I don't want the swing of a "big tournament" in the point calculation(especially for any player that may not have been able to make that big tournament).

Lastly, I want a system that every player can take the provided league point figures and easily work backwards and understand where each number comes from (so that eliminated logarithms for me). I want the players to be able to easily understand every factor that goes into calculating their points.
