Poker Terminology Clarification

Tonight at our home game, we had a disagreement. One person said he had the "nut flush".

There was a pair on the board.

Another objected to the usage, saying that the "nut flush" must be the best possible hand that also happens to be a flush.

The retort was that the "nut flush" was the best possible flush, but not necessarily the best possible hand.

Opinions?

The nut hand is the best hand, nut flush is just the best possible flush within each hand.
