Chips: 35 | | | How do you play with family (like a rookie for fun)? For most of us, poker is an everyday learning subject (books, tv, online or live tournaments). For the family, its a once a 3 month game for fun.
How do you play with family (poker beginners)?
- Do you try to play like when you learned poker?
- Are you very loose?
- Do you chase an ace on a suited flop for fun?
- Do you slow play a full house and bust half the table?
- Do you play A3 under the gun, or suited card knowing you have 6% chance making a flush?
Is it better to do the dealer, instead of winning almost every game and have a comment on every bad play?
Thats a weird question, but it happened tonight (first game since last year), and i'm thinking to do the dealer forever.

Trying to make any moves is silly, it just doesn't work on newbies. If it's just a friendly/family game, i'll put on my Gus Hansen game and get busted up. It's a good chance to play a different style than I would if I were playing for cash.

It was a little different, no chips we used straight up coins and every dealer was able to pick the game they wanted. I'll say it was a nice change getting to play various types of poker that normally I do not get to play.
For the most part I still folded on pocket crap. Saw early on that bluffing was not going to work because the father inlaw was always calling. I didn't try to rob anyone blind but at the same time made sure that I made out quite well. |

That ace is gold in their mind, catching a straight when there's an ace on the board can be a big hand. Newbie's value pairs too much and chase too much, you've got to play tight solid poker. As said above, no fancy moves, no check raising, it doesn't work. I hate playing with newbies when there's no money on the line, the great thing about poker IMO are the nuances of poker. People that don't understand the game, make for boring poker. They stay in a pot with bottom pair even when you represent a big hand...
I've aired my opinion on family poker before, it makes my blood boil. I love my family, so I don't play with most of them, just the ones that have a clue.

I'm a very competitive person, so people not paying attention and not listening to rules when I explained them just drove me nuts. I would surely play with family members if they focused on the game, but my family getting together means chatting and visiting, like many families, which doesn't go well with poker.
If I were to play with them, I would not try any moves because they may think bottom pair is a good hand and call if you are bluffing your pants off....

It's nearly impossible to play real, proper (or good) poker against people that don't know how. No offense to any of my family that may read this (yea, like that will happen ).
As others have said, you can't make moves, bluff etc to people who's experience is watching TV or movie poker.
My family unfortunately does not have the desire to learn how to play either. If I try to explain why an Ace-baby, small pocket pair, suited hole cards can only be played so far they get a bit defensive.
Any more, I don't even bring up the idea of playing poker. We just stick to Yatzee, Scrabble or Jenga . Less arguments that way.
