My new Poker Table Top

Hey All -

Recently we inherited a dining table set and sideboard. Other than the fact its a beautiful set and looks great in our dining room, this proved rather inconvenient for me since our empty dining room was the primary spot for my #1 table in my monthly home tourney. Therefore, I decided that I would make a poker table top that would fit on top of the new table.

Basically i made a standard poker table, but left off the legs and instead attached it to a piece of plywood with the exact shape of the dining table cut out of it. Then i just put some pieces of scrap velveteen on the bottom to keep it from scratching the surface of the table, and voila! Instant poker table! Its a little higher off the ground then i would like, since it basically sits on top of the table, but its nothing that cant be gotten used to. I didn't cut any cupholder holes, and plan on using the slide-under-the-rail style to keep any rogue beverages under control.

I managed to get this done for my next tourney coming up a week from Friday, now if only my custom ASMs will get here in time!!!

Just thought I would share, thanks for checking it out.

Edit: Added a picture with the top removed to prove to BigKyle that its really just a top!
(thanks for the comments BigKyle)

Re: My new Poker Table Topper

I really can't tell that it's not a regular table. Looks excellent, love the colors. If anything, the higher table may force the players to rest their arms on the nice cushioned railing.

Re: My new Poker Table Topper

That looks great, did it take much time to make? What did you use for the surface?

Re: My new Poker Table Topper

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Here is a quick expense list:

Home Depot
2 sheets 4x8 plywood: $70

www.yourautotrim.com
3 yds Rail Foam (1" 60lb Foam): $45
3 yds Table Foam (1/4" 2-EO Volara): $30
3 yds Green Suited Speed Cloth: $45

Joann Fabrics
3 yds Whisper Vinyl: $45

I already had the necessary tools and velveteen scraps, so no costs there.... so we are talking about somewhere around $230 plus tax or so. I hadn't used www.yourautotrim.com before, and found them thanks to Scott Keen's forum. They shipped very quickly and the items were very well packed (of course, its hard to damage a bunch of foam i guess!). This is also my first time using the closed-cell Volara foam for the playing surface. It seems a little too dense and "springy" for me, but I haven't actually played on it yet so the jury is still out on that.

As far as how long it took, I had built a couple tables prior to this one so I think I am fairly efficient at this style.... it took me basically 2 long afternoon/evenings worth of work: 1st to sketch out and make all the cuts, and the 2nd to glue the foam down, upholster the rail and surface, and attach everything.

Re: My new Poker Table Top

How sturdy is it on the far ends? The table tops I always play with you can't lean on the ends without completely screwing it up and tilting the table.

Re: My new Poker Table Top

When I just lean on the end, I can feel it flex a little bit, but not a bunch. If i put a lot of my weight on the end i can feel the table start to lift up a little bit. The ends only stick out about a foot on each side, so there isnt a lot of leverage there to lift the entire table up. Plus, the table is essentially 2 full pieces of plywood thick so there is some weight to it.

I wont have a real game on it until next Friday, so I will let you know after that if I notice any problems with it!
