Chips: 1,244 | | how do you handle this? OK, I have a home tourney on mondays, and we always break into a ring game after that...
Had a new player, a neighbor, there for his second game.
we have 6 players still playing and we're playing 1-2 NL O8 H-L
now 'Roger' just learned the game last week, after we explained it to him.
the key explanation being you can and must play 2 cards from your hand...
Well ,roger is in his 60's and has played games like criss-cross and cinicinatti a lot over the years. Games where the 2 cards you choose to play from your hand must play high and low.
so there's a really big pot (primarily from Roger raising it ) and he loses both. now, niether of his hands were good enough, but that's not the point.
Roger pitches a fit that we're not playing right, and show him in the rules where thats that, etc...Roger, apparently has a really big temper. I'm OK letting him vent until he starts using words like swindle and changing the rules to suit us....
Roger goes out for a smoke, relaxes a bit, but the rest of the night was uncomfortable (about an hour). He apologizes to me afterwards and says he's always been like this, blah, blah, blah.
We all agreed that we didn't explain the rules to his satisfaction and apologized for our part in the misunderstanding.
it wasn't more than a total of $120 in the pot, but what do I do now...
My inclination is to let it go and deal with it if it happens again. For his part, he says he's Ok with everything, but will sit out any O8HL we play (it's dealers choice of HE, 7, O, O8HL, and pineapple).
Now we've NEVER had an incident like this before and it was BY FAR the most unfriendly event ever to occur at my house during a game...
What would you guys do?

But tell him he needs to watch the temper.

Of course I'm a people person like that.

Good luck.

Good luck. | I actually thought of that, but this is the highlight of his week...he's an old retired gossipy dude, and he talks about the game all the time....
I think I'd feel bad taking that away from him on a 'first offense'

I would also offer to give him some pointers...but I would not feel guilty about him losing money...if you're gonna play in a game where you can lose a $120 pot and not be sure of the rules..then that is your bad. And that kind of behavior would not be tolerated a second time...its all supposed to be in fun..if he makes it otherwise..I would eliminate the tension and not have him back. Just my 2 cents. |
