Chips: 349 | | | Where to keep the bank When your running a home game where do you keep the bank of chips? I just have them near by where really anyone could try and take chips but I have a tight group of trust worthy people. Even then you never know and human instinct can always get the best of us so I was just wondering what you guys normally do? I know I could put the chips in another room or get a locking dealer chip tray but it's inconvient.

Sometimes I use a 500 chip tray I have and put it on a side table, but it depends on how many people are playing because I really don't have much room.

Keep in mind, I run a cash game of 10 players. When someone buys-in, I reach back and exchange the cash for cheques. I have a 300ct chip set. Now, if you are talking tournaments, we keep the cases at the bar. Only the TD and Assistant TD goes to the chips. |

I always take the "dealers seat" at my table, (Seat 0 next to the drop box for the cash) and everyone else sits wherever they want, first come first choice.
I'm the only one that handles the cash and chips, (Unless I ask the wife for help) but I always ask "What do you think you have?" when someone cashes out. Then I ask the person next to them to count it again for me while I get the money out of the drop box. Then I recount them myself as I put the cash on the table next to the players stacks of chips. The money goes on the table and is NOT TOUCHED (Unless it is just a single person leaving) until the chips are counted back into the racks.
At the end of the night, I go around the table doing this one player at a time, until all the remaining cash is distributed and accounted for against the chip stacks.
The players are then welcome to take their money, but may not leave until I put away the chips and the racks are squared, making sure no chips are missing.
It takes a few minutes to do this, but it makes the players all feel better about their cash-out, and we have discovered some mistakes by using this system that were easily fixed while everything is still out on the table. 99% of the time the cash-outs are correct down to the last quarter. |

Chips: 6,850 | | | Re: Where to keep the bank Like others, I keep the chips directly behind me still in their cases. And the money is separate (in a little jar). But we are a small group of friends and family, so it is never an issue.
But since Onthebutton brought up cashing out, I thought I'd share my system. We play low stakes ($10 buy in) with weird denoms (.10, .25, 1 -- don't ask!). I have my players stack their chips in dollar stacks in rows of five, starting with the .10. I verify one stack of 10, then look to make sure all are the same height. The .25 stacks are not a problem: 4 chips, easy to count.
With the rows of five, I can count at a glance: count the full rows, then add the amount of the last row. For example, 3 full rows plus an extra full stack = $16. This makes cashing out fast and very easy, except for the change issue. Often, people will put let's say .20 on the top of their last stack (of .80 obviously), so I can give them back a full dollar. And we have a jar of change for when I need it (which is just about every week!).
I'm sure a similar system would work well for larger buy-ins too. The key is not to count every stack, but to have the stacks arranged so that one can see a round amount (in this case $5) at a glance. |
