Re: Home games

When you have a dedicated "poker room" like the wife and I do (i.e. it is always set up and ready to go) people were calling us for games twice a week at least.

We used to play our ring games twice a week (Saturday and Tuesday) but brought that back to just Saturday night. With all the other house chores, we were lucky to get the room cleaned back up before the next game came around. Once a week is fine.

We also used to start at around 8pm, but those games would often last until 3am or so. So about 2 weeks ago we changed it to start at 5pm and now they end well before midnight. Much better for all involved including us.

Now that we are only having a game once a week, we need to have players call in advance to reserve one of the 8 remaining seats. When we were playing twice a week, if you missed the cut-off you would get first dibbs on Tuesday seating.

Once a week is fine for us now. Enough to scratch the itch and still make it something to look forward to on the weekend.

Re: Home games

We've been playing at least once a week for over two and a half years (not long for a home game, I know, but I've only lived here for 5 and a half years). We always play on Saturday nights, except when there's something stupid like Christmas Eve on Saturday this year. In that case, we played Friday! Since most of us are professors, we often play "extra" nights when we have spring or Christmas breaks. Or at the beginning of summer. Or when someone just HAS to play.

But I empathize with the difficulty of getting a game going: it took me 3 years to find anyone who wanted to play poker with me. I live in a small town, and all the WPT/WSOP hype was just starting (May 2003) when I found that my friend's parents wanted to play. All it took was 3-4 of us being really dedicated to it, and we then managed to suck more people in. And then suddenly it seemed poker was the hot new thing.

Now I'm trying to get a second game going, and I can't seem to find those other 3 people...

Re: Home games

I host a weekly tournament (league), and at least one weekly cash game, sometimes two. In NC there are no poker rooms of merit within 6 hours so it's pretty easy to get people to play at a home game!

Re: Home games

I play about once a month in home games, most of which I host, which you will find is less than most people around here. I would play more if I could, but school always gets in the way of what I want to do.

Funny but for the opposite reasons our home games attract a lot of casino players, and we have a TON of decent poker rooms within 30 minutes of where I live.

The difference is that in the casino, the "fun factor" is greatly reduced with a table full of serious strangers. Even at a 1/2 NL table, you really should not sit down with any less than $100, and unlike a blackjack table, there is not much chatter going on typically.

At our home games, we play 25/50 cent, $20 buy-in, and the MOST anyone has ever lost was $100. But we have fun. I run a tight ship (posted rule board based on casino rules) but so long as you play a "legit" game, (e.g. don't f-off) have fun while you are there. We joke about the way each other bets ("$2.25?, what kind of a stupid bet is that? Jeez you must be dumber than you look?") to telling each other what hands we have to induce betting, ("Well call if you want, I've already got 2 pair so its up to you if you believe me or not.") and enjoy adult beverages sometimes to near excess.

Of course you are not going to win enough to pay your rent when all is said and done, but otherwise we play some good solid enjoyable poker at least once a week, with a tournament about once a month.

Our games are "professional friendly" if I had to describe them simply.

Re: Home games

I play in 6 home games a month, $20 buy in between 16 & 24 players. Makes for a nice little tourney. Then the cash game on the side, for small stakes $.25- $1 limits. I usually don't see much of the cash game.

Re: Home games

We play at least one night a week, on Wednesdays. Often we'll get in more games during the week. Mostly tournaments for now, but I'm trying to get more cash games going
