Chips: 1,736 | | | More Chips or More Players I'm sorta facing a dilemma, I'm going to be inviting some friends over to play poker for New Years and it looks like everyone is excited about playing. I feel like I'm leaving out some of my friends because I don't want it to get too crowded. We normally don't have this many people interested in playing.
I only have 500 chips and I figure I can comfortably accomodate a T1000 tourney with no rebuys if 10 people show up. If I invite more people, I will have to decrease the starting chip count, and create a second table. Since I'm a chip junkie, I like to have lots of chips to start out with, even if they are mostly real low denoms.
I know the answer is to buy more chips.... believe me, as soon as the bank account recovers from Christmas shopping sprees I do intend to buy more chips. In the mean time, would you invite more friends because after all its a party. Or would you try to limit it and make the poker more enjoyable? |

Chips: 1,986 | | | Re: More Chips or More Players invite more people. Poker isn't less enjoyable just because you have less chips in front of you. It just makes it that more enticing to take chips from others.
Having said that, the answer is buy more chips.
Hell I know this is blasphemy but if you really like big starting stacks you could buy some really cheap crap chips (I saw sets of 60 at a dollar store near me, 60 for a dollar, almost got them to write a review) and just use them for the lowest denomination chip and color them up right away when a few people bust out. Make the cash side game play with the ghetto chips.
One other thought, none of your friends have their own set? |

Chips: 507 | | | Re: More Chips or More Players I'd go with the more people fewer chips option here. Poker is a social game and while it is nice to have monster stacks in front of you it is not necessary for the overall enjoyment of the game. Many big tournies will start you off with stacks as small as 20 chips and put the onus on you to make them grow. Finally, more people = bigger pot.

Oh, and always get more players. In reality, chips are chips. They aren't that important. Use bottle caps, or coins, or whatever.

Chips: 70 | | | Re: More Chips or More Players More people - hands down. Last time this happened to me, I just used my crappy dice chips in the mix. I know it looked ugly (to me) mixing chips but the others didn't know the difference. More money in the pot, and the more people there makes it more fun. |

Step two could probably do with being 'stop opening my chip case when I get home from work, just to look at the chips and make sure they're safe'. |

We used bottle caps at an impromptu game once. The next month the host had a new set of lables made using the bottle caps (read beer caps) from all the different types we drink as the design.
Oh yeah, Invite more players, beg, borrow or steal the chips needed. |

Chips: 1,728 | | | Re: More Chips or More Players I'm sure some of your friends also have chips sets don't they? If you're going to have more than 9-10 people, you'll be using more than one table. You could just ask one of the guests to bring their set of chips (hopefully of a different type than yours) and then use one set of chips at each table (also builds in a "security" measure so that chips don't migrate from one table to another.) If this is a one-time thing, it doesn't make a lot of sense to go out and buy another set of chips solely for that purpose. Quote: |
