High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

I'm thinking of using the funds collected from the sale of my "Show 'Em" chips to fund a High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot. Anyone do these in their home games?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide about the structure of each.

Re: High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

I don't do them but I've played in them before.

A couple of things to think about:

1. For the bad beat, are you doing the first qualified bad beat (AAAJJ or better loses) or the worst beat of the night (Ax4 loses to a Royal)? If its in a tourney, the winner may need to wait around till the tourney is over to collect for the worst beat but a qualified bad beat can payout right away. This is especially true for a bad beat when quads lose to a rivered Royal on the 2nd hand of the night. If your tourney goes 1.5hrs its not a big deal but if it goes 5hrs or more, ugh.

2. For the high hand, basically the same question: first qualified high hand (AAAJJ or better) or best hand of the night. Also, do they need to use 0, 1 or 2 cards from their hand to qualify? There nothing like a board of AAAAK to start a discussion on this topic.

Good luck.

Re: High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

Played High Hand before.

Top hand of the Tourney must use both hole cards, must showdown.

$1 per persons entry went to this in a $20 buyin

They don't really excite me. Kind of like playing with jokers, another vairable to
think about in a game with too much to think about for my "senoir" mind

Re: High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

We do them in our tourneys. The serious players can take them or leave them but the not so serious players like them. They are a great consolation if you are on the bubble and you get a bad beat laid on you.Waiting around for a payout can be rough especially if you are out of the tourney and then you jackpot gets taken by another player

Sounds like fun. I may have to try it out this weekend.

Re: High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

I use the bad beat prize to encourage new and inexperienced players.
It has always gone to a boat beaten by a higher one so far.

Wouldn't a board of AAAAK result in no losers, so no bad beats for anyone?

Re: High Hand Award & Bad Beat Jackpot

I used to do a Best Hand and Headhunter jackpot in my league. Best Hand went to a minimum of a full house using both hole cards. I put the both cards qualifier in later on just because to me it seems like more of a "pure" best hand if you're using both. We had a case where someone played J6 offsuit and ended up with a straight flush to win the jackpot. That kind of behavior shouldn't be rewarded in my mind!
If we had a week where no one qualified (no full houses), the jackpot rolled over to the next game.

Headhunter was similar. If you knocked out the last winner, you won something like $15. If someone won 2 tourneys in a row, they won the entire jackpot. The only time it was won was worth $150 or so.

I stopped doing them this year. Just too much to keep track of and collect. The guys still talk about Best Hand every once in awhile, but it hasn't been a major loss. We thought about bad beat jackpots, too, but again, just too much to have to worry about tracking when I'm trying to play.
