What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

Hey everyone, I am just curious to what everyone's feelings are on a home game that has a rake.

Some people around my college campus have home games, they are a single $1 blind and they rake a certain percent out of each pot up to $3 max, and sometimes on the bigger pots it is even more like near $5...

Is this rake structure even beatable is my question and would you play a game with $1 stakes with rake...

By the way, they do provide free snacks and drinks...

Thanks for all your opinions

I would not play in a raked home game.

Helping with snacks etc - ok.

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

I would toss in $$ for food/drink, but I wouldn't pay a rake in a home game. Besides, it's illegal here.

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

Illegal here too. And I would not participate in one.

If I wanted to pay a rake I'd go to the casino and get drinks and comps

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

I agree with the others. Not worth going to jail for what usually amounts to a few dollars in my pocket since the rake is taken. However, I can and will chip in for food/drinks,etc.

Justin

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

I would not play in it. It is illegal and that is not a small rake either. Even the poker rooms in Vegas don't take such a high rake up to $5 for a $1 blind game.

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

I'm hosting my first small tournament (16 seats) this weekend and all of the buy-in is
going toward bounties and the prize pool. I will have a jar for anyone who would like
to chip in for beer/food/cigars, but it will not be required or part of the up-front cost to enter.

Re: What is everyone's opinion on raked home games?

In my 20+ person £5 rebuy tournies, I normally take out £0.50 per person from the prize fund to pay for chips, soda etc.

It gets displayed on the tournament director screen as a fixed 'prize' so everyone can see where all the money goes.

As everyone here has said, raking a ring game would make the jump from 'home game' to illegal casino.
