TMSC Round #2 - Discussion thread

T-mold Semi-Customs Project: Round #2

We're quickly approaching the next phase of the T-mold Semi-Customs project, so...

Please use this thread for mock-ups and general discussion of Round #2 entries. Entries will comprise up to 12 chips using colours as determined by Round #1 voting. Available spot patterns are listed in the basic information thread. Chip colours can be chosen from those listed here and illustrated below.

(** I will update the list with qualifiers from the "other" categories after those polls close. Mock-ups now using the new-and-improved Canary Yellow and Charcoal **)

If you want, you may choose to keep your mock-ups/progression private until the "Round #2 entries" thread opens. However, I would like to advocate a cooperative "teamwork" environment, where we work together and/or constructively criticize each other's mock-ups, colour and spot progressions, etc. That way, we might be able to converge on a (relatively) few terrific and widely accepted entries. This isn't a competitive contest, but rather a collaborative project where CTers can join together to design a truly amazing palette from which individuals can build unique custom sets.

For Round #2 entries, you are restricted to using at least 1 chip from each of the 8 "standard" colours (a red, green, black, purple, yellow, brown, white, and blue), as described in the Round #1 entries/polls, and chosen only from those that "qualified" via voting. The other 4 chips may come from either the "other" categories OR from the "standard" categories. For example, you could include both a "black" chip with a black base, and a charcoal-based chip that qualified via the "black" chip poll, if you wish. All chips must use a base and one (1) or both (2) spot colours as determined by Round #1 qualifying, as shown below. A third colour (for 3t18/4t18 spot patterns) can be chosen from any available spot colour.

For further information, please see the basic information thread and/or search the guaging interest thread for answers to your questions.

Red:
1st (tie): Blood red with black and (white or hot pink)

4th: Black with canary yellow and (grey or white)

Purple:
1st: Laker purple with arc yellow and (w orange or white)
2nd: Lavender with laker purple and (light pink or sky blue)
3rd (tie): Laker purple with lavender and (sherbet green or saturn yellow)

Charcoal:
1st: Charcoal with black and (dark blue or grey)
2nd: Charcoal with w orange and (almond or canary yellow)
3rd: Charcoal with peach and (dolphin blue or mauve)

Pink:
1st: Hot pink with blood red and (light pink or white)
2rd: Hot pink with purple and (dolphin blue or grey)
3rd: Mauve with forest green and (laker purple or coral)

Sherbet Green ("Mixed Greens Nation"):
By popular demand: Sherbet Green with your choice of mixed greens

Other:
W Orange with arc yellow and (white or royal red)
Almond with coral and (light blue or plum)
Mustard with adobe and (chocolate or black)
Sky blue with dark blue and (horizon blue or lavender)

* Please note that a "mixed greens" chip using Sherbet Green as the base cannot be the only green chip in a 12-chip entry. That is, there must be at least one (1) chip using Dark Green or W Day Green as its base colour. As a result, the "mixed greens" option has been redefined such that it now includes only those bases but with any 1 or 2 of the other greens as spots.

Re: TMSC Round #2 - Discussion thread

So far much of my preferred colors are on the board. Still geared towards something like this as a tournament set:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
By meridianfc at 2008-02-08
By meridianfc at 2008-02-08

Prefer Black but not against Charcoal. Mocked it up as a 4T18 split, but I won't be keen on that pattern for any color unless we can be assured of decent fill color matching. My current BCC Yellows (Canary Yellow 3T18 Black/Canary Yellow/Dark Green) are starting to drive me nuts.

If a Sherbert Green makes it, prefer some spot pattern (614 most likely) other than Quarter Pie since I'm gung ho for the Chcolate Pie scenario.

Prefer any lighter color (Lavendar, Pink, White) for my 500 spot.

Strongly prefer the not normally available body colors.

Would love to get down on some 3Moon somewhere in there.

Charcoal is one of those colours that I'd probably recommend against using for body fill. I don't know for certain, but my guess would be that it might vary from batch to batch. Colours I'd be more confident in are white, grey, blood red, black ... (I could think of more if I was at home)... colours that seem to be very consistent among my samples (spanning several years) and/or of chips that I have samples with "body-filling" that worked really well (Mardi Gras $25,000, Samurai 25¢, etc.).

Isn't it a little safer to do a body fill the way MFC mocked his up since it is flanked by other inserts? Trying to create a 212 or 214... where the body fill is flanked by the color it is trying to match looks pretty crappy.

Definitely!

Michael already announced that there will be no body filling like a "212" (by filling 2 of the spots of a 214), etc. See the basic information thread for more info. The only body filling that will be allowed (and even that's a "maybe") is this "flanked" type... and even then, it's best to use colours that are reproducibly robust.

For example, the Samurai $500 uses a "flanked" body fill, as does the Mardi Gras $25,000. I have Samurai $500s where the middle spot matches well, and others where it does not (and looks like 2 different purple spots in a A-B-A pattern on another "blurple" base). So even with the "flanked" type, you may not get the result you want. Hence my suggestion to only do this with certain colours.

*EDIT* Another way to "cheat* with the body fill is to use the 3U spot and fill it with the base colour. That way, even if there's some colour variation, it won't really be noticeable since there will be separation between the spot and base.

Re: TMSC Round #2 - Discussion thread

Viet Rounders $100 is a Black 4T18 Purple/Black/White (IIRC, the outside colors may be other shades but you get the idea) looks **** hot. I thought it was the darker body colors that fared well, but in the end I'd rather have strong colors and a slightly less desirable spot pattern than a pattern that just doesn't work. In my mock up above I'd prefer Charcoal 4T18 Orange/Yellow/Orange than a fill pattern that doesn't really match (just as an example). My current Yellow chip has flanked colors and it just doesn't work (my fault I took the chance knowing I might not get a result, and hey I didn't).

Related I love 412 patterns but I don't like BCC's style of using 2X1/4 spots of the same color to do that insert. But that's just me.

Re: TMSC Round #2 - Discussion thread

These are just some quick ideas that jumped into my head last night. I'm sure that they'll change as more options come open. I still like the idea of having a "darker" green as the base and then tossing in a sherbert green chip as an add on somewhere down the line. I'd like to go "semi" traditional with a set having green, black and then maybe varying the colors just a litte as the set moves along. The almond/plum/coral chip is an awesome color choice I think!

By the way, no need to use all 3d14 anymore... That was just for picking colours that qualified. Now you're highly encouraged to use whatever spots you want. I mean, you could use all 3d14 if you want, but I assume that won't be a very popular set...
