My own unauthorized/unofficial poll on Paulson Hotstamp Font

I realized, since I am curious about what others think about the relative merits of two different fonts in the Paulson hotstamp group buy, there should be no reason I can't post a poll to see what the larger group thinks. So look at the two chips below for font only and pick between what I call the "Roman" font and the "Saloon" font:

I must point out that I have absolutely no decision making authority or even direct influence whatsoever. This is JM's and Nugzy's? baby and they have to work with what Apache is willing to do based on its own commercial judgement. However if there were a big tilt towards the Roman font, Apache might reconsider its preference. I don't know where JM or Nugzy stand personally. They have been doing an excellent job of herding the cats on this one, but certainly deserve the right to insert their personal preference in dealing with Apache.

To be upfront, as I have said elsewhere, while I can settle for less than my own perfect everything (see my new found flexibility on the black chip!), the "saloon" font may be a deal breaker for me. In addition, I really LIKE the "Roman" one. While that should not impede any "groupthink" in another direction, if there just happened to be overwhelming support, maybe it would have some influence.

I think, given the choices he makes on his website, Apache has a personal preference for "old west" themed goods, but i think he has an even better appreciation for getting customers what they want. If the poll were better than 60% to 2/3rds in favor of the Roman font, he might go that way. To me this is more of a home game set of and not a fantasy casino, as such the more innocuous yet classic font seems to fit better.

Put it this way, if you were going to make your own currency, or label something of real value in your home, and you are over the age of 12, which font would you use? No offense on the age qualification, but I realized that my children WOULD probably pick the "saloon" font for their currency and labeling needs, so maybe this must makes me a curmudgeon!

I first voted for the saloon, but only because I like the scale of the text and value better. Forgive my 3-minute photoshopping, but I think Roman wins if the font sizes are the same:

This isn't even a serious question. Spamproxy, I suggest you go look at a lot of the historic actual casino hotstamps. Your suggested font does not look very good at all when put in perspective IMHO. Sorry.

While it is a serious question, you may not like my serous answer. As I said, before I don't see this as, yet another poser fantasy casio effort (I do however own very happy a samurai poser fantasy casio set myself), but rather a new "home poker chip set" with a more neutral apeal. Because Vegas puts a large gravitational pull on things poker related, and because Vegas is where it is, it is not surprising that there are a number of hot stamp efforts that Bret Maverick would be familiear with, if not proud of.

However, poker is and has been played, with Paulson chips even, all over the world. I am sure hotstamping has been used in Europe for instance without need to visually reference the old west. Perhaps that is why the Roman font emerged when a "Rounders" (British) theme was being contemplated. Despite my own feelings on yet another Rounders themed set, I would probably have gone for it, if i knew that would dictate font usage.

All that being said, in the first few votes, there seems to be a small preference for the "Saloon" font, so if that holds or grows, it doesn't really matter how sound my reasoning is, that is what folks want. Even if a majority agreed with my w ay of thinking, it might have no affect on where the decision makers in the effort want to go. I just thought it would be interesting to see where my fellow chiptalkers stood. Now I am finding out. My purchase would not have made that big a difference to the overall totals, so it is best that the most liked elements be used (no matter how wrong headed and lacking in aesthetic values those choices are, iMho..lol).

I like your size reduction and think it is an improvment too!

Re: My own unauthorized/unofficial poll on Paulson Hotstamp Font

well i admit defeat to either an overwhelming majority of folks wishing they could carrry six shooters and sidle up to the bar and ask for whiskey in a dirty glass or someone with really advance knowledge of how to break the polling codes!

wow. it was certainly informative.

well this frees up some money for some other poker chip projects so that is not all bad (in addition, if i am not mistaken, the "Shapes" or Suits molds colors will probably be used for the so called "purple" chip and while not usually a one issue voter, the combo of these two makes it easy to pass). I still think this GB is a great idea and sincerely hope those of you who see it to the end enjoy a remarkable set of chips at a great price! It has been a long ride, but I am afraid this is my stop. GL all!

I'm in the minority b/c I like the Roman--but I'm not a serious collector and I don't have a sense of chiphistory.

Amen brother. I thought the really good ideas were passed up in favor of the most generic design, which was made clear as the ultimate goal early on by Nugzy. I just dont care for any of the suit molds other than the $25. and even the roman font i dont like the dashes -25- should just be 25 imho.
