Group Buy Information General: Since there is a bit of renewed interest in this chip, and since Ace and Pot Hiker and Murf have all initiated and left the group buy process, I have decided to step up to move this thing along. Watch this post for all new information and development. It may be relatively slow here in the next few weeks, but I will update everything as we have information including manufacturing options and design. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to post them or PM me. If I feel your question of an important detail, I will post a public answer in this thread along with all announcements.
More information on the historyu of this buy can be found in the original thread:
Original Black Sands Thread --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQs What will the chip look like? Here is the original
inlay design, as done by Grath, from the original thread:
The chip is inspired by the Palms pastel Tournament chips seen here:
Palms Tournament Chips. The chips will be done in Off-White, Light Blue, Light Red/Pastel Pink, Light Green, Grey, Lavender.
Who will manufacture these chips? The Black Sands Resort & Casino chips will be manufactured by the Blue Chip Company of Las Vegas.
What will the mold look like? They will have a custom house mold inspired by the old house molds of the Dunes and the Sands casinos seen here: -
Dunes House Mold - Sands House Mold. See the following thread for
very rough sketches:
Black Sands Mold Design.
What about the inlay? The overall design is above. Some tweaking is being done to improve font visibility. We are aiming for a 1" inlay (Same size as the Desert Palms chips).
$64,000 Question: How much will the chips cost? $64,000 question indeed. Currently pending, but using a custom mold adds $7,500 to the cost.
Watch this thread for updates. There is currently no time-line to begin the group buy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updates *Edit 4/22/2006 4:14pm Central* Right now the interest is so low in these chips that they will cost quite a pretty penny to manufacture. Because of that I have re-opened a discussion with a second chip manufacturer and I am working on a second mock-up as a more cost effective option. Details:
Blue Chip - price per chip - $0.60 normal clay mix, $0.80 Samurai clay mix, $7500 for custom mold. Do the math at different quantities. I'll give more info as I get it and post almost-final mock-ups in the coming weeks. Thank you for your patience.
*Edit 4/4/2006 7:20pm Central* Quick update guys & gals to say I'm sorry it's been silent the last 10 days or so. My practice at work has been involved in a fairly major move and any down time I have spent has been jsutthat - down time. I should be done with my office move by the end of the week; Monday at the latest. Expect some fairly big pieces and news next week.
*Edit 3/20/2006 11:43pm Central* Right now there is some work being done to revise the inlay design. When printed to-scale the fonts are simply to small to read, especially the "Palmetto Bay, St. Kitts" ring. Feel free to print out on your own to see what I mean.
................Poll on Interest in Group Buy *Edit 3/19/2006 5:58pm Central* Three polls underway related to the possible custom mold. These polls will run for 7 days each, ending Sunday, March 26th, 2006.
................Poll on Fonts ................Poll on Text Seperator ................Poll on Mold Design ................Poll on the Black Sands Location *Edit 3/16/2006 12:28pm Central* Current thread on design of the possible custom mold is here:

Due to a number of personal developments, not the least of which being a new child, Grath has had to step down from helping further the design process of the Black Sands chips. As such I need a partner in completing their design. If you are interested in helping in this roll, please PM me rather than posting to this thread (so we can keep the thread relatively clean). A custom mold will be the only work that needs to be done. When you PM me, please an image of your take on a Black Sands custom house mold (including the inlay), with the conept being a mold similar in style to the old Dunes and Sands house mold.
*Edit 2/25/2006 12:00pm Central* I just added an VERY preliminary poll at
http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15397.
*Edit 2/23/2006 12:52pm Central* *Major Update* Ok, Big info here. I have talked with three chip manufacturers: Matsui, Blue Chip and ASM. - Matsui has the old clay chip available (the one that Ten and a few others of us have and everyone likes), but they are only available for hotstamping. Matsui is still working on an inlay chip, and is not sure when they will have one available for production. So this will not be Matsui
. Sad.
- I've been tlaking with Dave at Blue Chip for a number of months about another chip I want to design, but suffice to say we have discussed a custom house mold (similar to a Dunes type mold). This is still in a design phase, but you should get a general idea. It would also be easy to do the near-dayglo colors we originally discussed for the chips. Blue Chip is a strong possibility.
- I've also spoken with Jim at ASM about doing the Black Sands chip on the blank mold (used famously as the Chesterfield chip in Rounders). He said yes, but... he has a number of "blank" molds and wants to run some chips from them to see which might be the best to use. ASM is a stong possibility.
So there you go. The Blue Chip mold is in design. When it is finished we'll present the two option mock-ups (ASM blank and BC custom) to the public so we can decide what direction to head, any tweaks that might be needed, etc.
*Edit 2/22/2006 2:46am Central* - To answer the question of who is making these: I am talking to three specific chip makers. Each has different pros and cons. When we have finalized all three designs we will present them for a vote to determine the chip that will become the Black Sands Resort & Casino Tournament chip.
*Edit 2/08/2006 11:50pm Central* - A bit of info to satisfy some comments and PMs I have gotten: the end result of this will be better than TRKing chips in that it will be cohesive. There may be a custom mold; there may not. There may be a blank mold; there may not. These may be a chip you've been waiting a year for; they may not. In the original spirit of this chip, the direction it heads in will be put to a vote but TRKing is not an option. If you must have TRKing chips, please do so on your own or seek out another chip. These will also not be ChipCo or Nevada Jack's.
*Edit 2/07/2006 11:56pm Central* - I have talked with two chip manufacturers thus far, and am waiting to hear from two others. I'll update when I've heard from all four. This process will move slowly at first, and ramp up once details are fleshed out.

*Edit 2/04/2006 6:49pm Central* - Due somewhat in part to cost, but mainly because Dennis seems quite disinterested in being helpful, this will not be a TRKing chip.
