I did not take part on either GB, but I did get some rippedsheets samples from Cin03 and ASM HH samples from pc.com so I have experience with the whole oil then label thing.
I had 6 sample chips to work with, so I tried 3 where I oiled first, and then labelled first with the remaining 3. Both worked just fine, but make sure if you are oiling
first that the chips are
lightly oiled.
This is obvious, but maybe not so obvious that you should wait a couple days before labelling. My oil job was not very light, and the labels did not stick very well; they stuck but with some force you could move them around and they could be peeled off fairly easily. I let the chips dry for a week and the labels adhered much better, much closer to the chips I labelled before oiling. Waiting two weeks worked best, they stuck very well but this could have been avoided if I had used less oil.
The 3 I oiled after labelling were fine and the rippedsheets labels did not smear or appear otherwise damaged from the oil. However after a week or two passed I noticed that a couple had discoloured very slightly on the edges where the label had not been firmly pressed down and oil had pooled in the space between the chip and label.
So basically the best method, from my limited experience, appears to be to lightly oil them and let them dry thoroughly, then apply the labels.
