Matsui Decal WSOP Chips (UPDATED 8/7)

I have been in contact with matsui about making a decal chip (bud jones style) along the lines of the WSOP chips. I have recieved artwork from matsui. The artwork is below. The molds are not binding. I was looking to see if there is interest in these chips, and to see if anybody would like to get a group buy going. The Bud Jones mold CANNOT be used in this buy. We are limited to the matsui molds. The price per chip will be under .90/ chip.

This is the latest updated mockup. (7/25/05)

I am new. I see pictures of these in the card player magazine and am guessing that at the WSOP they aren't using plastic chips?

Are these really plastic?

Are you building a chip that resembles what they use or are we using the same chip they use at this tournament (I am wondering if plastic why .80-.87 cents)?

Thanks in advance for insight.

At the WSOP they do use plastic chips. Bud Jones plastics (you can see the BJ at them bottom (boy, this parenthetical is tense) of the chip).

Just noticed that. Wierd - the sample I have is 40mm.

Let me ask something....

Is the Head Honcho of this group buy buying them to sell them retail?

Because I am definately in for a basic set of 500...but I would probably want to add to it in the future...and it would suck if I coudn't.

I am really looking forward to seeing what the Inlay will look like...
I second the above. These chips have some serious potential, but right now these inlays look bad. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just telling it straight. If these chips shape up the way I know they could, I'll definitely be in.

I think the alterations alf mentions will go far in making this a good chip.

The goal of this buy (correct me if I'm wrong) is to have a chip set that matches the real WSOP chips as closely as possible. Well, we can't have the same molds. We can't have exactly the same colors. And we can't have exactly the same text. But you all have been busting your asses on making the molds and color schemes as close as possible, with good results, and now it's time to do the same for the inlays. Find out if WSOP is doable. It's only four letters for god sakes. And do everything you can to make the inlay look like the WSOP inlay. Bigger font, more coverage, etc. This isn't going to be cheap, let's not half-ass it.

As I have said before, the inlay is from the chipco buy and will not be used in our buy. I sent an email over to matsui with a picture of the current inlay, and told them to mimick it as CLOSELY as possible. As of now we will keep "rio" in the inlay until we find a better word for it. As of now I plan to sell these for retail after the buy. I am not sure how many I will buy yet though. I may explore the options of finding other retailers to get in for the group buy price (to reach our 100,000 chip level). I will do everything I can to keep the prices low (below .90 is what we are shooting for)

As was said before, the WSOP uses high quality plastic chips (made by Bud Jones). These are not 11.5 gram crappy plastic chips. They are high quality plastic with great inlay graphics. The chips we will be using are made by Matsui. They are said to be the same or better quality than Bud Jones. We are not going cheap with this buy, these are top notch.

After playing with the decal samples for just a day, they already are sticking much better. They arent sliding as much, and they sound great. These will probably be one of the best chips made to date

i got a suggestion for the inlay

WORLD ZERIES OF POKER

and then instead of Rio he will have
WZOP

its the best i can think of at this moment. or you can put a backwards S in there in Series that kind of looks like a Z. how could that be infringing on trademarks? anyone remember the Gary Sheffield Upper Deck rookie card? backwards SS.

Do you imagine it is legal to sell a cola drink called "Coco-Cola"?

If it is a trademark violation to use WORLD SERIES OF POKER or WSOP it is also a trademark violation to use WORLD ZERIES OF POKER or WZOP.

I don't know if it is a trademark violation to use WSOP, but if the chip or even the inlay looks too close to the WSOP chip, it will certainly be a copyright violation.

They might be more lenient about these things in Asia where the chips are produced, but if there is any violation, in theory the whole lot could be stopped when imported and destroyed.
