Do we still dislike it? (Pharaohs on the new mold)

My guess is the Pharaohs will be on the new mold we saw unveiled today on the internet. Initially I was appalled by how it looked, but I decided to open up Photoshop just to be sure. Below are the results, and you know what? I think they still look damn good. Also, for those who were worried about the cross-hatching only being on the outside edge, a closer look at the red chip laying flat shows texture all the way to the inlay. I can't tell if this is the cross-hatch pattern of the clay, or perhaps the linen finish over the inlay? Judge for yourself:

New Mold

I'll agree that the outer circle would have been nice, and that I realized also that it was a pipe dream we all hoped would happen, but am totally satisfied and happy with the way the inlays look on this mold compared to the oversized mold and small inlay on the JB's. The new JB's do look nice, but do not compare to what this set will look like.

Great job to everyone involved, glad I found the link and got in on the buy.

This is kind of how I feel, but I have to take what you say with a grain of salt -- considering your signature...

Forgive my ignorance for a minute. Are the concentric circles actually the little grooves on the outside of the inlay?

Also, I noticed the 3D images seem to have a tiny circle around the inlay before you get to the mold, while the 1st pic in this post doesn't, it seems the inlay runs traight into the mold with no circle in between. Which one more closely resembles the new mold?

the desired concentric circles are that inner groove (between the inlay and mold), and the outer one (just inside the edge of the chip) that you can see on the pharaoh's page, and sometimes on the front page of chiptalk.

the mockups on the top of this thread are what we think (at this point) this chip will actually look like.

I can understand them not adding the circles on the mold, but having the inlay with no circle surrounding it (between inlay and mold) makes the inlay look lost IMO. Maybe if the text and Hat/cane were closer to the inlay it would look better.

Guess I'll just wait and see........

While I believe that the concentric circles added a lot of class and professionalism to the look of the Pharaoh mock-ups, I think that having the concentric grooves might draw your eye to off-center inlays more than if the grooves aren't there.

The mock-up is a single piece of art assembled by hand with extremely precise tools -- and the results show. When Paulson is churning out chips by the 10,000's, there are bound to be placement/centering issues on the chips. If an inlay is off-center and there is a groove in the mold a few millimeters away, you are definitely going to notice the error.

But that's just my opinion -- I could be wrong.

BTW, I'm completely OK with the mold, and still content with my 1,500 piece order.

What strikes me as odd is the Trademark Photo's are just aweful. The colors of the chips and edge spots(other than the inlay's) are going to be exactly like the JB Paulson's, the new Pharoahs and the blackhills Paulsons. Trademark must have used some wierd lighting of a shitty digital camera to take there photos.

I am not crazy about the new trademark chips but I do like the new mold better.... and I can bet these chips will look better in person or with better photos. I hope whoever gets these first would post better pics of the TM paulsons

FWIW, this was the original mockup I did, sans CCs:

Not an actual chip pic, but for now, probably gives a better idea than the lousy Trademark images available..

These chips are gonna rock. In reality, it's the artwork that sets them apart from all the others (props to J5). Concentric grooves or not, they are going to look awesome.

I think your mockup looks significantly better than the actual chip, because the "Paulson Chips" text is centered better between the inlay and the rolling edge. The actual chip has a big no-man's-land between the text and the inlay, so it still looks like the mold was designed for a larger inlay.

The Pharaoh's inlays are killer. They'd make any chip look great. It's too bad that the inlays aren't bigger on these chips.

Open letter to Paulson:
You can't be #1 when you treat your customers like #2.
