ASM (pc.com) Group Buy **CLOSED***

35,471 (118.24% of total needed) chips ordered and paid for as of 6/15/05.
12,496 plain
22,975 spotted

*The ASM group buy is now CLOSED. I will be placing the total order on 6/16.

BACKGROUND
ASM (Atlantic Standard Molding) have been making casino chips for over 70 years, including many of the old time casino chips in 1940s Las Vegas. Currently they sell quality clay chips online through http://www.pokerchips.com and allows buyers to pick their own color combinations. This group buy has secured a substantial discount (through volume purchase) of their custom color, non-inlay chips with the Horse Head Mold. We are limited to 15 different color combinations for the chips with edge spots and 4 plain (non edge-spot) chips. Over a 2 week period, members of this forum have discussed and voted on colors for each of the 19 different chip offered. These are the chips offered:

Plains

Grey, Imperial Blue, Pink, Orange (left to right)

Spotted

White/Blue, Blue/White, Mandarin Red/Arc Yellow, Mandarin Red/DayGlo Yellow, Mandarin Red/Imperial Blue, Green/DayGlo Peach, Green/DayGlo Yellow, Green/Yellow, Black/DayGlo Green, Black/DayGlo Pink, Black/DayGlo Peach, Lavender/DayGlo Pink, Purple/Arc Yellow, Purple/Grey, Yellow/Black (left to right from first row to second row)

The traditional casino chip body colors are White/Blue for $1, Red for $5, Green for $25, Black for $100, Purple for $500, and Yellow for $1000. If you need help in choosing colors, feel free to ask for help by posting on this thread. We would be glad to help.

REASONS FOR GROUP BUY
1) Pokerchips.com offers the same HH mold spotted chips for $0.50/chip and DO NOT OFFER the plain HH mold chips to the public. The group buy pricing averages a 15% discount over those prices. These prices are distributor prices, it is absolutely the rock-bottom price ASM offers.
2) The biggest advantage is delivery time. Pokerchips.com takes over a period of 3 months to fill an order, whether it has an inlay or not. We have been guaranteed a 4-6 week production time.

PRICING
Spotted chips - $0.43/chip
Plain chips - $0.33/chip

** Please note these prices reflect shipping-to-me expenses and in accepting credit card payments through PayPal. This is purely a non-profit group buy.
** The above prices are firm and apply to everyone, REGARDLESS of your payment method.
*** In case you are wondering if PC.com will provide extra chips along with the order, the answer from them is "yes, but not many." I will pass along all extra chips proportionally to the buyers.

SHIPPING
Shipping rate for the US is calculated via the following method:
$11 for the first 100 chips, $0.70 for each additional 25 chips.
Example: For a 500 chip order, shipping will be: $11 + (400/25)*$0.70 = $22.20

For Canadian orders, please add a flat $3 to the above rates. Please note that I will not mark this as a gift on customs forms and will state the actual value. Any other international orders please email me with your order for a shipping quote (guo.shou@gmail.com).

* The chips will be shipped carefully packaged and padded with insurance.

PAYMENT DETAILS
You have the following options. Please note the different deadlines.

1) PayPal (Deadline: Midnight EST 6/12/05)
Pay through PayPal (http://www.paypal.com), one of the safest ways to pay and receive money online via a credit card or direct bank transfer (if you have questions on setting up an account, email me at guo.shou@gmail.com and I will be glad to help). Payments should be made to guo.shou@gmail.com. Note that I will ship to the address on your PayPal account unless you tell me otherwise.

2) Money Order/Cashier's Check (Deadline: Postmarked and in the mail by 6/3/05)
MOs and Cashier's Checks are ok, but please note the different deadline. I must receive it in the mail by 6/10/05. I will email you my address if you choose to pay via this method.

3) Personal Checks (Deadline: Postmarked and in the mail by 5/31/05)
Personal checks need time to clear, and I only offer that as an option if you send it out immediately (please note deadline). I will email you my address if you choose to pay via this method.

SAMPLE CHIP ORDERS
SAMPLE chip orders are accepted, but there is a 25 chip minimum. You may mix & match whichever colors you like (e.g. 5 pink, 15 yellow/chocolate, 3 grey, 2 white/blue). Shipping will be $5 per 50 chips ordered (if you order 10 chips, shipping is $5. If you order 55 chips, shipping is $10).

After playing around with the color chart, I like these colors a lot for a set:
plain gray for quarters
blue with DG peach for ones
mandarin red with black for fives
green with DG yellow for twenty-fives

I posted this over in the Custom chips forum, but I am going to post it here too as I think it is relevant to this Group buy:

Ok,

I will start the debate (and maybe end it too) on how deep the recess is.

Yesterday some plain (no inlay) ASM Horseheads showed up at my house. I had the inlay ones before, but now I have both.

I can tell you why there are conflicting stories on this topic. The reason is that without a VERY accurate instrument you really can't tell. If you just run your finger over this surface or just visually inspect it you could easily come to either conclusion, recessed or not recessed. The reason for this is that it is an ever so slight recess. There is also an inner ring or circle that separates the edge area and the inlay area too. If you are just looking at the chip, these two areas look the same. If you run your finger over the area you do feel something, but you might conclude that all you are feeling is that inner ring or you might conclude that there is a slight difference.

Last night I got out the micrometer and took measurements. I would concur with CaptLego's guess at .002 recess. I took several measurements on a few different samples that they sent and they all seemed pretty close.

Back to how thick are labels? Once again a standard copy sheet of paper is about .004" thick, so in order for that label to sit down below the edge the label would have to be roughly 1/4 the thickness of a sheet of normal copy paper, or .001". This would allow about .001" space in there. Is this possible? I think it probably is. Others have stated that they have found very thin labels and they seem to work.

Jason, others........

How thick are the "Very thin Labels" you have used?

The next question to be asked is: Is it really worth it?

Positives to this solution:
1) Price, you would be saving maybe 45¢ per chip vs having pc.com doing a custom inlay

Negatives:
1) More time and effort. You still have to figure out where to get labels and how and where to get them printed. Then you have to manually put all those labels on.
2) Label will still be quite smooth no matter what you do. This will be an inferior feel to having pc.com doing it. Some may not care about this, but it will feel more slick/cheaper etc.

Some had the DG edge spots, others did not. And we tried like hell to break one with our bare hands but were unable to do so, which could be an indication of our relative strength or batch irregularities. If you read the ASM chip review on this site they also address the durability issue and agree (with my brother and I) that the chips will be fine.

Did you try breaking all of your samples? We tried each one, and our sample set had the following base colours; chocolate, imperial blue, grey, black, lavender, and green. I would suggest trying every one you have, it may be that the one you broke is an anomoly and the rest are good. When we were throwing them against the concrete they would leave little coloured marks on the conrete, but none broke or cracked, they just lost little tiny chips.

After hearing the solid colours are now game I am interested in ordering some more, I think I will keep my current order with pc.com of 1000 because I am not sure if the group colours will be what I have already selected, and they will probably arrive around the same time anyway.

But I would like to add to my collection depending on the group's choices, and I think this is going to be a big problem. Already people are posting pictures of their choices, and some are saying they are in IF such and such colours are used. Obviously not everyone is going to get EXACTLY what they want, but hopefully we can all come to some kind of a compromise where everyone is satisifed.

Seeing as how everyone really like the Rounders KGB chips, it might be an idea to use those colours and edge spots since they appeal to a large group of people here? 15 colour combinations should be sufficient, but I think the first step is to decide on how many with edge spots, then decide the base colours.

I think it would be best if there was one person who was in charge; think of how many controversies and problems were avoided in the Pharoah buy since Ten could put his foot down and make the decision. This group buy needs one person to make these tough decisions that we all abide by or there will be a constant debate and we will not see these chips until Xmas.

I really like the idea of plain greys for quarters! Great idea!

I'm hoping we can come up with a couple good choices for blue and reds. I would like to see white spots on my red chips, but that's my preference. Really on the blues, I think I could be happy with whatever we come up with. The DG peach looks pretty good and I didn't think I would like that. Several other spot colors would work well also I think.

I also like the idea of plain greys for quarters. Put me down for 200 of 'em. I ordered some edged spotted ones about two and a half months ago. Hopefully they'll show up soon?

Do we have a running tally of colors and counts yet?

I agree. Since its Ledavatar's group buy, he should be the one with the final say.

It would be helpful to have running tallys of color combinations and how many chips for each combination. People at the bottom of the counts would be encouraged to change their color combos to ones with higher chip counts until we have the 15 color combos.

So I think we have 1 plain color down - grey. I like this as well. Anyone up for white and pink? I think we can end the plains discussion quickly.
