It's an interesting idea. I read a little on their fees, and there aren't many. If the total money collected is over $1000 they take a 4% fee to cover Paypal charges they incur. Also, the group leader would need a premier or business account so they could receive more than $1000 and would be responsible for the Paypal fees that transaction would garner. Fundable could also send the total money to the group leader by check for a $10 fee. One potential problem I see is that there must be a goal total for the group to reach and the group action expires if the goal total is not met within 2 weeks, but as long as the planning stages of a group buy continue to take place here and then the group action is started on Fundable after all the kinks are worked out I don't really see any downside
Does not quite work out for chip group buys because the funding is unitized (each person buys an equal unit). That said, the site mentions a multiple unit buy program (one person can buy up to 4 units). This still falls short for something like the AB samples group buy in that I've got anywhere from 1 to 10 sets being ordered and the shipping cost does not unitize (a four set order does not cost four times a one set order to ship).
That said, it's close to something that may have lowered my effort for the group buy, it also would have removed the $0.30 fee per paypal transaction that really bites for buying one sample set.
