Chips: 1,071 | | | Idea - Group Buy to Raise $ for the Hurricane Victems There are a lot of people on this forum - and we could join together and raise some money - probably won't be a lot - but every bit helps.
It allows us chip addicts to turn our addiction to something that is positive and helps others | | Sponsored Links | |

Chips: 7,134 | | Good idea, but after the Pharaoh buy and with all of the GBs going on now, you aren't likely to get many people in on it... especially if the edgespots on the red chip aren't to everyone's liking! I think people should just go to www.redcross.org and make a donation. That's what your role model Boris did! And if my bitter ass can do it, you people can do it. |

Chips: 1,071 | | | Definitely make a donation to the Red Cross
Then buy a set of chips to support even more.
My thoughts - have Nevada Jacks make them and add $0.05 to each chips to go to one or two of the organizations like the Red Cross.
This makes a statement about chip fanatics and poker players - we care. |

Chips: 925 | | | pokerstars is also holding 2 different tournies, a $20 + $2 and a $5 + $.50 i believe. i can't check on the details right now because i'm on a computer where i can't download the ps software, and it doesn't mention it on their website. anyway, p-stars will match dollar for dollar the buy-ins to donate to helping out w/ disaster relief. in the past, p-stars has raised huge amounts of money for charitable causes (one that comes to mind is the TONS of money they raised for the tsunami victims). if no one beats me to it, i'll post more info when i get home... |

Chips: 845 | | The PokerStars.com tourney is sponsored by Wil Wheaton ( www.wilwheaton.net - you'll probably figure out who he is on your own if the name isn't familiar).
I had told myself (and my wife) that I wasn't going to put in any REAL money into PokerStars until I thought I was good enough to not /waste/ it right away. But, this is an exception. I'm going to deposit, so I can play in these tourneys. http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/2005/0...e-katrina.html http://www.wilwheaton.net/mt/archive...2.php#comments
So, I get to "play" and donate to a very worthy cause at the same time. This of course does not preclude any other donations we will be doing, just gives me a good excuse to try my hand at a real-money tourney, instead of the play ones.
By the way, there are now 4 tourneys in consecutive days.
I'm shooting for not embarrassing myself totally, but pretty sure I will! |

Chips: 12,174 | | There's other worthy charities out there to contribute to as well. I don't think everyone should contribute just to the redcross. I'm still kinda pissed off at how they've handled donations for recent disasters. My choices so far have been www.aspca.org (the animals need help too!) and www.salvationarmy.org (these people do so much with so little). Take the money you would have spent on a group buy and contribute it to a charity.

Chips: 845 | | If you want to make sure of the charity, you can check out places like: http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html
For some high-rated charities. There are a lot there, that get high marks, most of which spend more than 75% of your dollar on actual help, instead of operating costs.
Red Cross gave themselves a bad name after the whole "wholesale buying of equipment" with the 9/11 donations. I think they may have ruined it in the eyes of a lot of people. Thankfully, the people in charge at the top at the time, are no longer there. They have turned around, and doing quite well.
I'm partial to Church World Services, which is affilated with my local church, so that is where my extra donations go.
To each their own.
And, since this is so far off topic here, I'm not going to reply to the thread again with this off-topic (although very important) stuff.
