Quick computer question

I do a lot of work in Microsoft Word (2000), and all of a sudden something has changed.

Normally to delete something I highlight a group of text, then hit backspace.

Now, just for the past week or so, if I highlight text and hit backspace, it doesn't delete!!

WTF? This is just on Word, though. I still highlight my normal way in other programs and on the Internet and such.

Someone is probably laughing at how simple my question is, but does anyone know how to fix it? Otherwise I have some adjusting to do.

Sometimes the Track Changes feature will cause this. Changing your view to "Final showing markup" should fix it...

<edit>
Just noticed that this is Word 2000... check in Options, under the edit tab. There is an option for "Typing replaces selection". Make sure that's checked.

My XP machine will start exhibiting weird behavior from time to time for no apparent reason (audio volume stops working, mini-hangs during editing, etc.). Over the years I've been conditioned to accept that on Windows machines you need to reboot them on a fairly regular basis. As a software engineer this drives me nuts but what can you do. Perhaps you are just dealing with one of those "weird Windows behaviors".

Give 'er the ol' three finger salute (ctrl-alt-delete) if nothing helps. I'm not kidding.

Have you tried using the DELETE button instead?

J5....Yeah, I have been using the delete key, but it is hard to break my old habit (I type about 3-6 hours per day).

I'm going to give your ideas a try right now...I'll let you know if I figure it out..
