I hate computers.

Okay, so I've had a Dell laptop for 2 years. Now, the thing is locking up a lot. Like, every 30 seconds. It will freeze for about 10 seconds, then do something for 30 seconds, rinse lather repeat. I've reformatted about 5 times, to no avail. I'm assuming this is some kind of hardware problem, but I don't know enough about that end of computers to do anything about it.

Anyone that knows a lot about laptops have any advice?

Thanks, playas.

Oh yeah, and we can skip the "buy a new computer" posts. I'm probably going to do that, but I don't need yinz to tell me that.

Re: I hate computers.

Dells have a hardware diagnostic tool built in.

Boot up the system and on the first screen push F12 and it will do a bunch of tests. When my hard drive failed it went all "Bleepity-bleep your computer sucks". I imagine it does the same when other crap is broken too. It'll give you some code you have to look up if something isn't working right.

Re: I hate computers.

Let me know what the test says and I can try and help you out.

Does it just hang and you have to power cycle it? or does it stall out for 30secs then starts running windows again?

Re: I hate computers.

Hopefully it is just the battery. A weak battery made my notebook act funny even when I had it on AC power.

Try yanking the battery and just run it off the AC for now, might help.

It seems like it just stalls out. Like, I'll click something, the window will lock up, but the mouse cursor and everything will move fine. Then, the processor will suddenly come alive and work for about 5 seconds and the window will finally unfreeze and do what it's supposed to.

Crap, good call, my battery has been basically dead for a long time now. I didn't even think of that. I'll try yanking it after the test is done and see what hapepns.

Re: I hate computers.

I know my PC has a reset feature where you can reset it to a previous date. Of course, anything of importance you loaded on to it (or saved) after that date, will get blown out.

Don't know if that will work for you, but it's better than "get a new one" or "hit it with a mallet."

Good luck
