New game being spread at the Commerce: "Texas Stud" Poker

Ya never know what you'll see working at the ol' Commerce Casino.

Last week, a new game was added to the main poker room, which they're calling "Texas Stud" Poker. The idea was apparently to combine Texas Hold'Em with Seven Card Stud to get a new game. In truth, it looks more like Super-Eight with one less board card, and one extra betting round.

The game uses a dealer button and two blinds. Presently the game is being spread at limits of $2/4, $3/6 and $4/8. Players are dealt three down cards, then there's a betting round. Then a single community card is dealt to the board, followed by another betting round. This is repeated three more times (for a total of four board cards and five betting rounds; betting limits double on fifth street) followed by a showdown. The best five-card hand (zero-to-three hold cards in combination with the board) wins the pot.

It does sound like an interesting game, though I can't stand the name; the Commerce is in California, not Texas, and this isn't a stud game. I've taken to calling it either So-Cal-Seven or California-Seven.

What do you guys make of it?

sounds ok,

but i get more thrilled of one of the variations we play in our home game

its called Stud`em

everyone is dealt three cards then everyone in order from SB to button has to select one card that he uses as an upcard(shown).

then its it played like normol PL or NL holdem

Kind of like a crazy pineapple roll-your-own. Weird.

The "Texas Stud" game sounds cool, even though the name is horrible. I like California Seven, which is what I'll call it at my next home game when I introduve it to see what the guys think.

Sounds like a game full of action! I'd imagine that players used to playing hold'em would not immediately adjust to proper starting requirements, the same way that holdem->omaha players have problems.

Looks like they copyrighted it and are trying to sell the game to other casinos...doubt if that will fly. An extra round of betting compared to HE means bigger pots (and more rake) though...it might sell to online sites.

I agree that "California Seven" sounds better. "Texas Stud" might be confusing to casual players.

I would be interested to hear some Texas Stud strategy analysis from our seasoned poker experts here at C-T.

I hope it makes it's way to Vegas in early May. I'd give it a try.
