Omaha Cash game

Intereseted in starting an Omaha game. I currently host a .25/.50 NLHE every week. Max buy-in is 60. That is probably my groups comfort level. Any suggestions on Omaha structure. Lower stakes is my thought. Any suggestions?

Re: Omaha Cash game

i`d chop the blinds in half because it has way more variance then holdem. so 10/20PL or 10/25PL maybe.?
and make sure you explain pot limit so theres no confusion

Re: Omaha Cash game

We added .25/.50 Omaha to our NLHE game a while ago, and we play dealers choice now (Omaha/Holdem) every Friday. Originally we went pot limit, but it didn't end up mattering so we just changed it to no limit. (all big pots were all ins anyway)

No limit Omaha is absolutely brutal though, so be careful.

Re: Omaha Cash game

While we are on this topic.........can someone explain how to quickly calculate what a pot sized raise would be in PL Omaha? It is my understanding that you call first and then your raise is based upon pot size after your call. I am typing this after working a midnight shift so forgive the rambling

if you're raising...a pot sized raise is 3x the current bet PLUS whatever's on the table (not counting the bet you're raising).

so if there's 10 in the pot and someone pots it (for 10), and you want to raise the pot, you can make it $40 to go.

the reason why...essentially you're calling the bet (10, to make the pot 30) and raising the pot (which is now 30), for a total of $40. i wouldn't explain it that way to a n00b, b/c it would just encourage "i call and raise" which we know is a string bet.

just explain they can say "i raise the pot", and that it's 3x the bet plus what's behind.

about the structure; i'd keep it the same. there's more variance, but so what? i'd make it a little smaller if you're worried about losing players, but making the stakes smaller could just make the maniacs play maniacally, leading to the same end.

Re: Omaha Cash game

We've been doing 50c/$1 NLHE, but will occasionally go 25c/50c PL Omaha.

The play is way looser in Omaha - we constantly have limped family pots pre-flop. Or a pre-flop "raise the pot" and half the table calls. The Pot Limit pots get just as big.

Are there any casinos running a No Limit Omaha game?

Usually our first hand of PL Omaha after a tournament is someone doubling up to $40 and someone re-loading for another $20.

Re: Omaha Cash game

I would recommend keeping the omaha game PL instead of NL.

I host a .50/1 NL DC game and omaha is one of the games. I'm going to be switching the omaha to PL as the crowd I play with is really loose and love to gamble - most raises in omaha will be at least $10 and there are usually at least 3-4 callers. It quickly becomes a game of 'put your entire stack in and flip a coin' poker.

Re: Omaha Cash game

Maybe play $1-$2 Limit. Pots will still get decent sized because at those stakes players will stay in to draw to their hands on the turn & river. We play dealers choice NL with games that include Holdem, Crazy Pineapple, Stud, Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo. We have a $20 buy-in with blinds of $.25/$.25. We all like the variety of games because after a while just playing Holdem all night does get boring.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Variety is the spice of poker! (and variety is not playing a NLHE cash game after a NLHE tourney!)
