I'd say that it adds a bit of strategy and takes away quite a bit of psychology. i.e. if you KNOW that there are 8 people in the pot then keeping that flush draw is obviously correct. If you have to GUESS how many people will be in there's a lot of psychology involved.
In other words, I'm not disagreeing with you in principle, just in semantics. I would say the more information you have, the more strategy... the less information you have, the more psychology. When you discard definitely changes the game.
FWIW, I've always played it "discard after flop betting round". The only reason I'd want to do "discard as you bet/call" is so that all the drunks get the discard right
