ASM mold Ranking
If someone knows how to put up a cool poll that would enable us to capture the ranking, please do! I'm afraid I'd mess it up.
I thought it would be interesting to see which ASM mold is the most preferred?
I know this is VERY subjective as there are lots of factors to consider, but if you had to pick just one to recommend to someone which mold would it be?
So rank your favorite from least to most; 1 being the your least preferred and 12 being your most preferred. At the end of the week, I'll tally up the results with a final ranking.
Note: this is NOT a thread to slam any particular ASM mold but rather hopefully a survey that CT members could use as just ONE of their tools when contemplating a custom set. I'm sure there will be plenty of comments as to the "why's" but the reason's aren't that critical to this thread; but comments welcome.
Molds to be considered are only the one's in the Chip Factory; with the exception of the two variations of the smooth no-mold which I know there are a few sets out there. So let's include it as well. If you have never personally handled a particular mold, then I guess rank as zero's or n/a.
If there's a better way to do this, I'm open to suggestions....
There are 12 molds to rank.
I'll try to get it started:
No mold (textured) 12
FDL - 11
American - 10
Elephant and Crown - 9
H-mold - 8
Horse Head - 7
No Mold (smooth) - 6
Cards and Dice - 5
Hourglass 4
MD-50-Diamond square - n/a
Roman - n/a
Circle Square - n/a

Re: ASM mold Ranking
I like the more textured molds from ASM, and haven't handled all of them, but of the samples that I've had the chance to evaluate, I liked the hourglass the best... Assuming I understand the scale (1- wouldn't recommend, 8- highly recommend), this is how I would rank them...
American - n/a
Cards & Dice - n/a
Circle Square - 11
Fleur-de-Lis - 1
H - 10
Horse Head -8
Hourglass 12
No mold (smooth) 1
No mold (textured) n/a
Roman - n/a
Elephant and Crown - 9
MD-50-Diamond square - n/a

Re: ASM mold Ranking
Ugh. I started this and gave up because I kept mixing up higher number with 'worse'. Why wouldn't the 'best' mold be #1. I would never rank anything from worst to first so just gave up. Even the guy above has 3 '4s' and two '1s' so WTF does that mean?

The idea is to award the most points to the mold you prefer most while awarding the fewest to the mold you prefer least.
Sorry if was confusing.

Re: ASM mold Ranking
I'm just ranking them in order of preference, with comments.
I like the looks and feel of these three best:
10 - MD-50-Diamond square
9 - Horse Head
8 - American
These four feel okay, but not my favorite designs:
7 - H mold
6 - Circle Square
5- Fleur-de-Lis
4- Elephant & Crown
Don't care for these three at all, looks or feel:
3 - Cards & Dice
2 - no mold (textured)
1 - No mold (smooth)
And I absolutely hate everything about this one:
0 - Hourglass
No points or ranking for this one - it's no longer available. Nice mold, though:
n/a - Roman

I realize this is subjective, but I was curious as to why you dislike the hourglass mold so much? The reason I'm asking is because I'm in the process of designing a set of tournament chips and was actually planning to use the hourglass because of the textured nature of the mold.

Every hourglass mold chip I've handled (and there have been many) has exhibited the exact same characteristics -- too light, too hard, too brittle-sounding, and looks/feels like cheap hard plastic. I also think the mold design is way too busy, but that's not the overriding factor. I've seen some magnificent inlays produced on the hourglass mold, and absolutely none have managed to capture my fancy.
I just don't like how it looks, feels, or sounds. It sucks.
Subjectively, of course.

Do manufacturers vary their formulary, temperature, or pressure for specific molds?
Just trying to understand all this -- the hourglass is my favorite of all poker chip molds.
