I've contemplated custom chipcos, but thought they would be too expensive for a decent home/tourney set. I seem to remember that I'd be limited to 4 chip colors or there was an extra fee. Would you mind sharing the details on cost and number of chips per denomination. I'm completely void of any imagination or artistic ability so I'd have to spend the maximum on artwork. What could I expect for the cost of the artwork for a set like yours? Was there an extra charge to get the different chess pieces around the chip? Thanks. | For full custom chips with the same design on both sides ("gold artwork") the art fee is $199. $175 more (platinum artwork) for chips with different designs on each side. Four denominations is standard. $30 extra for each additional denomination/color. Fancy edges (text, non-standard edge spots) are also an additional $30. I imagine that if you went with a different design on each chip, it would be $199 for the first chip and $175 for each additional chip or something like that, but I don't know for sure.
If you are unsure of what you want, sign up for their free members forum. There are nearly 200 of their designs in the artwork gallery. Text changes on chips are at no additional charge (ie, denominations). Since the edge pieces on the checkmate design were probably done with a true type font, I would guess that they were not extra.

L | I only gave Patrick the basic layout to start with. As things would get more solid, I concentrated on the details (fonts, edgespots, etc.). Patrick gave me great suggestions all along the way, telling me from his experience what the real limitations are in the final product. Many times I would say, "I want this to be different" and he would produce several options and we'd go from there.
JLDiCarlo gave you the info on price. My chips, even though there are variations on the border, did not cost extra per chip. By using a true type font, I was able to avoid the extra art fees and still get a unique chip for each color.
What theme do you want to do? How would you like it to look? The more clear in your mind you are at the beginning the fewer iterations you'll end up with. I suspect that no matter where you start, though, Patrick can lead you through to a great design.
Good luck, and for my money, this was THE way to go.

Chips: 9,819 | | | Nice job and I too can't wait to see actual chip pics! Wasn't there a grand master who recently said he was giving up chess for poker? This should be his set!

- Fins | I don't know but it wouldn't surprize me. Howard Lederer is a former highly ranked chess player himself (and also my favorite pro).

Chips: 810 | | | I wouldn't be surprised either because chess takes strateg and quick thinking and observing. This is similar to poker. But it still seems that every new pro once played magic the card game lol |

I've been thinking about a theme of the "House of Payne" with a dominatrix with a long whip. Kind of a pain and pleasure (for some) rolled into one. On clay I think the inlay would be too small but on a chipco there is more area to do it justice. Thought about trying it out on a Nexgen with Jason or Lynbark taking a stab at it.
I had thought the price would be prohibitive of doing this on a Chipco. From the sounds of it this might be possible. Would this idea be enough to get Patrick started? |

Definitely enough for Patrick to run with but that aside... the more you can do on your own the better off (happier) you'll be IMO... take some time here as it's definitely well spent... Although Patrick won't rush you, once you start the process it'll have the tendency to rush it's self (who likes waiting!) plus you will have a limited number of reviews (a good amt & not set in stone but limited none the less).
Consider...
**doing up some rough drafts and post for comments... if you have no graphic skills than post some pics/graphics with descriptions of how you'd use them to get some feed back... chip examples could be helpful e.g. I like this chip but the text would be X and a whip would replace the chess pieces or whatever.
**picking out designs/chips that you like as far as styles, attributes, edge spots, wraps, bkg layers... whatever... peruse their past custom sets & search the web for actual chip pics to get ideas.
**Search for images that you like and could possibly use.

The better idea you have of what you are looking for, the better.
Do you want a sexy woman in black leather, or just a whip? What (exactly) would the text be. Do you wand denoms? How many? etc.
Look at the chips on their website in the (free) members section. Look at the clipart in the members section.
Good luck, and keep us informed.

Chips: 13,575 | | | Just heard from Patrick that the manufacturing folks had to cancel my order. The edgespots were too difficult for them (problems with the overlap I think). In the end I had to go a different direction. I sent Patrick a suggestion similar to what is on DiCarlo's chips. We'll see how it turns out. I was a little worried about the chessboard edgespots anyway.
