I like the chessboard edgespot too. Not a big fan of the photo for a chip tho. It looks a bit cheesy, as you said in your first post.
Maybe you could suggest a gradient for the chessboard on the inlay ? It could add some density to the graphic, enhancing the volume of the chess pieces.
Can you do a different playing piece for each denomination? For example:
Pawn = $1
Knight = $5 (Or as my daughter calls it, the Little Pony...)
Bishop = $25
Rook = $100
Queen = $500
King = $1000
Or same arrangement starting with 50-cent up to $500, and the $1000-chip is the king-on-the-side "checkmate" design.
Now I might even buy that set!
"I call your Bishop and raise you two Rooks."
This would make each chip a little less busy, and give continuity to the whole set. Not sure if it costs more to have different designs, but its a thought.
And the edgespot design really make the chip complete...
I don't think that you need to simplify the design... it look great as it is.. but would change the queen to a king on the main design.. also like that you have choosen a white 1$ [smilie=biggrin.gif]
Also.. I think this forum works great.. I hope I get some input as well when Im starting on my custom chips.. if I manage to get my customs half as nice as these I would be wery happy...
I must say that Im impressed with youre creativity J5... the chessboard edgespot is really someting..
