I am becoming a chip freaky and I am starting to seriously think about a custom clay or ceramic chip set.
From what I have heard and seen there are 2 options for small sets: pokerchips.com and homepokerchips.com. First of all let me tell you I understand the differences between clay and ceramic. And I like both of ´em.
As I have ordered samples I like both the feel and looks of them. But I surely prefer a clay feel and a ceramic look. So both are great for the almost USD 1 a piece price in 500/1000 sets (besides the artwork fees that I will have done by a friend).
Bottom line is: which one of these has a better "way of work". I dont mean being gentle and kind but to provide quick and responsive feedback. It looks like pokerchips.com has had some negative feedback but who knows... others love them...
The vast majority of negative feedback that pc.com receives is from their lead times.
They can take up to 4 weeks to get your art proofs done if you don't provide any art and the chips won't get to you any earlier then 14-16 weeks after the art is finalized. Other then that, I have not heard of a single person who has gotten their chips from pc.com and been disappointed..they have always been very happy with the end result, just not the wait.
I dont know anything about hpc.com so I cant help ya there, sorry.
FWIW, my wife bought me a bday present of 500 ceramics through homepokerchips and she couldn't have been happier with the whole process. She bound the correspondence between her and the involved into a little book for me to read on my bday since the chips weren't ordered in time to actually have them in hand. Both the artist (Patrick, if I remember correctly) and the owner (Dave, if I remember correctly) were very friendly and responsive. They also weren't pushy at all which I was very impressed with since my chips went through several changes. From what I read of their correspondence, both went out of their way to make sure she was happy with the product before they went to production.
I guess it comes down to the graphics/design you want to use, and whether that will be more fitting for a chipco chip, or for a 7/8" clay inlay.
Response time is going to be a lot quicker with homepokerchips, and Dave seems to be a really nice guy. But the saleswomen at pokerchips.com are all easy to deal with. I certainly have had a reasonably good experience so far with them. The graphic design took longer than I orginally thought, but as long as you're patient it's worth the wait.
The other thing I forgot to mention is the only art fee pokerchips.com has is $50 for color artwork for the entire order. No set up fees for each different graphic/side.
Home Poker Chips service is great - I just got finished placing my order / approving art work last week - now waiting for the chips! The service from both Dave and Patrick was terrific.
One thing though - and I'm 99% sure of this - you will pay the FULL artwork fee no matter how much of the work you do yourself. They still need to convert it to their format and part of it is setup fees and the like.
imo, the choice between these two places is simply the choice between chipco and clay. i'd go pc.com in a second, b/c i like clay better. hpc seems fine too, if you like that sort of thing.
